About the Item

Beautifully proportioned, low profile antique 14 karat yellow gold ring from the Art Nouveau period features five bezel-set amethysts and two bezel-set natural pearls, surrounded by entwined leaves of varying sizes, birds, a flower and a curlicue. The ring is beautifully and solidly made, and is in great antique condition. The shank of the ring has not worn down, and is patterned like a branch, with leaves growing out of both sides. The gold has a rich, natural antique patina. It has been cleaned but not polished, to preserve the beauty of the patina. 5 old-cut amethysts are round, oval and pear cut. One round measures 5.77 mm in diameter x 4.6 mm deep and weighs approximately .73 carats. One oval measures 5.67 mm x 4.67 mm x 2.25 mm and weighs approximately .32 carats. One oval measures 6.27 mm x 3.65 mm x 2.7 mm and weighs approximately .33 carats. One pear measures 8.3 mm x 7.2 mm x 4.2 mm and weighs approximately 1.20 carats. One pear measures 6 mm x 4.3 mm x 3.3 mm and weighs approximately .42 carats. Total weight of 5 amethysts is approximately 3 carats. 2 pearls measure approximately 4.6 mm and 4.5 mm in diameter. They are not perfectly round and have visible pearl nectar. Hallmarked, "14k". Face of ring measures 31.91 mm long x 20.02 mm wide x 5.45 mm high. Size 7. Weighs 7 grams. Art Nouveau jewelry, popular from the mid-1890s until the early 1910s, is characterized by soft, curved shapes and lines, and usually features natural designs such as flowers, birds, and animals. Art Nouveau jewelry favors stones such as amethyst and natural pearl. The style got its start in Paris, when a German-born art dealer named Siegfried Bing opened Maison de l’Art Nouveau, giving the genre its name. In addition to paintings and fine jewelry, Bing showcased the work of Frenchman René Lalique and American Louis Comfort Tiffany, who helped popularize the style.
