Antique Early Victorian Black Enamel and Old Cut Diamond Mourning Ring
About the Item
A one of a kind antique early Victorian black enamel and diamond mourning ring set in 18k yellow gold.
The ring is composed of an oval plaque, set to the centre with a star motif with an old cushion cut diamond. The plaque has been hand enamelled with engraved detailing around the edges. The band of the ring follows the same design with 'In Memory Of' written across the back.
Considering the ring is from 1866, it is in remarkable condition. The enamel is all original with no signs of repair work. The design indicates that this was a bespoke piece made for a distinguished Victorian individual to remember their loved one. Because it was a bespoke piece; it is a true one of a kind and which makes it unlikely that there is anything similar.
For size reference, the head of the ring measures 14-millimetres in width and there is a gross weight of 6.1 grams. The central old cushion diamond is estimated to weigh 0.12 carats, estimated I-J in colour with VS clarity. The ring is currently a UK finger size N 1/2 and due to the design cannot be resized! The ring is stamped for 18k gold, London hallmarks with the date letter for 1866.
