Edwardian Jade Ring Bright Apple Green Certified Untreated

About the Item

What a gorgeous, bright, and luminous cabochon of vivid natural and untreated Burmese jadeite jade. What's more, this is a "double cabochon," meaning it is domed on both sides, a cutting technique often reserved for the finest jade stones. And the color is among the most prized of all: "apple green." Brighter and with a hint of yellow that "imperial jade" lacks, apple green jade is considered the second-most valuable shade of green jadeite. Color is subjective, and many prefer this bright, happy color over the more brooding intensity of "imperial" green jade. The stone measures 15mm x 11.1mm x 6.11mm so it is a generous size. Handcrafted in the Edwardian era -probably early; 1902 or so- from 14K yellow and rose gold, the stone was removed at some point in its history and given a modern polish before being returned to its mounting. I know this because the jade has a high polish that was not possible to achieve prior to the 1950s in China. However, it's also not a modern polish. It looks to me like a 1960s era polish. The re-polishing of jade stones in antique jewelry is not uncommon: it maximizes the beauty and value of the stone. I love the sweet, simple mounting. The "basket" in which the jade cabochon resides was created in rose gold -the perfect compliment to the apple green; while the remainder of the ring: the shank, the four prongs that hold the jade in place are yellow gold. Please keep in mind I see no glue reside anywhere, even under the microscope. So this stone is held in place by the four prongs alone. And while the stone is secure, you may at some point consider having your jeweler "re-point" the prong tips. It's entirely possible the stone is not even original to the mounting. Because I am sure the stone's polish is newer than the mounting, there's simply no way to ever know for sure. One might think such a spectacular cabochon of fine jade would have been given a setting glittering with diamonds, but this is often not the case. Some of the finest jade stones are found in some of the humblest of mountings. Currently a size 6, your local jeweler could resize this ring for you if need be. It ships with a certificate from Stone Group Labs stating that the jade is untreated jadeite from Burma (Myanmar).
