Retro Emerald Bombe Ring with Diamonds
An over 5 ½ carat bright, soulful emerald cabochon measuring 11.23 mm x 10.79 mm is perched atop a hand-fabricated 14k white gold scaffolding in a kind of chevron configuration that supports 54 single-cut diamonds. This ring is bold, audacious, whimsical, and when you make a fist while you're wearing it, the emerald-capped diamond bullet will project over 15 mm from the surface of your finger. The 2 mm stones are eye-clean, single-cut diamonds that are white and eye-clean. This is a ring with in-your-face elegance; it's aggressively beautiful and the bluish-green emerald cabochon is magnificent, dense with natural inclusions. Looking at it through the microscope is like looking up through the frozen surface of a lake. Not every ring ought to ship with a microscope. I'm not going to try and describe the exact tone of green. You have to experience it. It can be very light, bright, open and practically fragrant one minute and then a cloud passes in front of the sun or you step into the shadowy corner of the room and the emerald is now a sultry, brooding imperial jade-green. I say *jade* because this emerald reminds me more of jade than any other emerald I've ever owned. It even has a high-gloss polish like a jade carving. A "bombe" is a dome-shaped cake in the unlikely event you did not already know, and this ring is of the bombe style that was all the rage during jewelry's illustrious retro period of the 1940s and 1950s and this ring harkens from a date somewhere in there, 1947 is my guess. It has two "14K" stamps on the interior of the shank which is less evidence that the jeweler at the time was a superfan of 14K white gold and rather a sign that the ring has been resized. Resizing an emerald ring is tricky because the emerald is fragile(ish) and can crack. I'm positive the emerald was removed for its prior resizing(s) and should you choose to resize it from its current 6 ¼, you should instruct your jeweler to do exactly this. This dramatic retro emerald and diamond ring is eccentrically beautiful and ready for anything: the holidays, the wedding, the birthday, the award show, the dinner party, the Monday blues, the Tuesday just-because.
