Retro Italian "Confetti Cluster" Diamond Ring in 18 Karat Yellow Gold by Molina

About the Item

This interesting cocktail ring features a domed cluster of nine little gold squares, each curling around a 0.10 carat diamond. The look is distinctly mid-century -- freeform in its elements yet with an overriding pattern -- and brings to mind cubist/brutalist architecture like Habitat 67 in Montreal. The mounting is very well-made and the stones are set in tidy little old-style open basket prongs. Another nice detail is the band, which tapers slightly toward the back on the top and bottom edges but actually tapers toward the shoulders on the side edges. We replaced two of the diamonds because they were chipped and our replacements are of better quality than the original stones, which are SI1 clarity and I-J color. Our stones are VS1 clarity and H-I color. The total diamond weight is 0.9 carats. The face of the ring measures just under 1" wide and tall, tip to tip. The elevation is just under ½". The band is 1.5mm thick and just under 3mm wide (measured at the center back). Currently, this ring is a size 8. Resizing between sizes 4.5 and 9.5 is complimentary. Stamped "18K", "750" (for 18 karats), "ITALY" and "319AL" This last marking -- 319AL -- is the pre-1968 Italian registration mark for Molina, a family-owned goldsmith formerly based outside of Alessandria. (The firm closed shop in 2000, though the founder's son has his own jewelry business and retains most of the original firm's designs.) The total weight is 11 grams, of which less than 0.2 grams can be attributed to the diamonds.
