This beautiful piece spotlights a small, 18k yellow gold and sterling silver beetle dotted with tsavorites, that sits within a larger beetle fashioned in rock crystal. As if the larger beetle is protecting the smaller, this pair sit on an 18k yellow gold ring crafted to resemble branches. The rock crystal beetle’s head is treated with sandblasting, for a matte effect, while its body is clear, to magnify the beetle within. This unique piece makes a beautiful statement on the hand. Real scarab beetle wings that shimmer and catch the light are the focal point of the elegantly intriguing Scarab Collection, which reimagines these insects as beautiful adornments. The wings are taken from beetles that are eaten in Thailand, a country where the insects are considered a delicacy. Always seeking to work with sustainable materials, Bibi takes the discarded wings and transforms them into regal pieces of jewellery. With the scarab wings adorning rings, bracelets, and necklaces, the wings’ ever-changing colours mean they’re eternally enchanting as jewels. Scarab beetles have been prized as auspicious symbols reaching back to Ancient Egyptian times, with Bibi’s Scarab Collection a stylish, contemporary interpretation of this insect’s protective, talismanic qualities. The creator of this piece, Bibi van der Velden, believes that jewellery should imbue the wearer with energy, with her pieces offering a playful, personal, and highly artistic take on fine jewellery. This personal touch comes from a jewellery-making process that’s grounded in traditional craftsmanship. Working with sustainable and unexpected materials, among them 60,000-year-old mammoth tusk, ostrich eggs, and scarab wings, Bibi hand-sketches and hand-carves each piece in wax. Bibi describes her jewellery pieces as “miniature sculptures.”
