Vintage Morganite, Pink Tourmaline and Diamond 18k Rose Gold Ring

About the Item

Vintage 18 karat rose gold Morganite, Pink Tourmaline and Diamond ring. The ring is cast and of handmade manufacture consisting of a 6 row wire shank and top set with a center Morganite weighing 10.00 carats, surrounded by a triple row of tapered baguette cut pink Tourmalines (24) weighing approximately 2.70 carats. There are 12 round brilliant cut diamonds in the corners and 12 more on the sides. Approximate weight of the diamonds is 1.85 carats. The diamonds are G/H in color and VS in clarity. There are french assay marks and maker's mark for Yendis, Paris. Circa 1940s. If the name “Morganite” sounds rather unscientific, that is because this perpetually blushing variety of beryl was named after John Pierpont (J.P.) Morgan, the preeminent American banker and philanthropist of his time. Of course, Morgan himself was far too busy to make time for the discovery of rare and precious gems, so the stone was named in his honor by one of his closest friends, George Kunz. In the rush for ever more exotic varieties of gems that characterized the jewelry scene in the early 1900s, Pink Beryl, as it was originally called, was discovered in Madagascar in 1910. The first gemologist to possess the stone was George Kunz, chief gemologist of Tiffany & Co. at the time. Kunz and Morgan had crossed paths with frequency as Morgan was possibly the single biggest American collector of gemstones at the time, in addition to being one of the largest donors to the American Museum of Natural History and that institution’s peer in Paris. As the head of Tiffany’s venerable gem buying arm, then, flattering Mr. Morgan with this gift of recognition was an easy decision to make. But in addition to J.P. Morgan’s highly important contributions to the study and discovery of gems, he also left his mark on the tony village of Princeton through his nephew, Junius Spencer Morgan. Junius, having graduated from Princeton University, commissioned the erection of a grand home to be called Constitution Hill, on Princeton’s highest point where portions of the New Jersey Constitution were signed at the old Stockton homestead, formerly owned by U.S. Constitution signer, Richard Stockton. Tracing the lineage of the parcel back even further in time will reveal that its original owner was none other than William Penn. Today, Junius’ magnificent estate serves as the focal point of an idyllic retirement community that sits in the heart of Princeton’s dignified Western Section, accessible from both Elm and Rosedale roads. Junius continued his uncle’s legacy of local philanthropy, donating generously to Princeton University and The New York Public Library among other institutions. Though both of these venerable men exist only in the pages of history today, Morganite elegantly represents both their legacy and a critical point in the history of Princeton.
