Antique Dog Micro Mosaic Ring in 12K Gold with Engraved Shoulders
About the Item
A charming, somewhat rustic and worn, Victorian micromosaic Dog ring to keep you company.
Crafted of yellow gold testing around 12K, the ring features a sweet Spaniel type of Dog depicted in micro mosaic form within a large oval shaped glass tablet. Pretty engraving decorates the shoulders of this substantial and striking antique piece.
With his big eyes and wagging tail, this pooch looks cheerful and happy as he sits in the grass, head turned to the left, perhaps to see his person nearby.
The small/tiny tessarae and glass tablet do show a fair amount of wear, though the dog is very clear to see and enjoy. There are some broken tessarae which I can see with close study and magnification, and a few missing, I think, though it's not terribly easy to tell with this design. The wear to the black glass tablet is more noticeable, with some nicks and scratches, particularly around the edges of the beveled tablet. I've left the ring in "as found" condition, and it is rather dirty, as well. The gold mounting remains in lovely condition.
With the face measuring just under 1 inch x 13/16 of an inch (approximately 24.8 x 21 mm) and a rise off the finger of approximately 7.5 mm, the ring has a big and rather dramatic presence.
I love the leafy engraved raised shoulders, which remain nice and crisp.
Still nice and sturdy, the band remains in good condition, with only very slight signs of having once been sized. No hallmarks are present. (I have tested the gold to confirm its purity) On my scale, the finished weight is a hefty 10.40 grams.
Currently fitting around a size 8.5, the ring can be sized up or down within reason by a good jeweler. If it is sized up I would expect to add more gold at the back to keep it strong.
