Second Etruscan Revival Figural Ram Ring in 18 Karat Yellow Gold with Ruby Eyes
About the Item
This striking figural ring is sort of a modified ouroboros -- the ancient round symbol of a snake eating its own tail -- only here the snake has the head of a ram. This whimsical mash-up of motifs puts it squarely in the mini-Etruscan revival of the 1940s and 1950s, when designs were informed by ancient artifacts, but didn't really have the imitative rigor of the first Etruscan Revival in the mid-19th Century.
Substantial and gracefully proportioned, with outstanding detail at the head, this ram has hammer-set ruby eyes, (about 0.06 carats total) and a gracefully tapered, round body. The rubies are a modern cut and are probably replacements or additions.
Since most of the detail is best viewed from the side, we think this ring makes a great pendant -- so much so that we're including a black braided cord chain with your purchase.
Marks: Stamped "18K;" no maker's mark.
Measurements: Tapers from 7.5mm wide at the head to 2mm at the "tail."
Weight: 10.9 grams (not including cord)
Sizing: Currently size 5.5. Resizing is complimentary for full-price buyers, but could be tricky for sizes larger than 6.5. Please contact us if you need a larger size.
