About the Item

An impeccable rare antique William IV era mourning ring. This is an extra special piece with an unusual and fine design. The ring is crafted in rich 18kt yellow gold with heavily decorated engraved shoulders, the shoulder engraving is highlighted in black enamel and a most delightful aspect of this piece there is a small enamel forget me not flower on each shoulder. The forget me not flowers are decorated in light blue and yellow enamel a realistic and stark contrast from the rich gold and black. The ring has a locket front surmounted with a rich red antique garnet stone, the stone and locket front can be lifted out to store a lock of hair or other tiny keepsake. The garnet front is surrounded by a halo of beautiful creamy split pearls in an arched design. There is so much going on in this ring, so much love and sentiment, it was most certainly crafted with the love of someone very special in mind and memory. The ring is engraved to the inner band Marianna Head, died 16th Feb 1832 aged 89, it is further engraved with the inscription Philippians 1:2 to live is Christ and to die is gain. Possibly in rememberance of the early female poet Marianna Head née Attwater, she was thought to have written works up until the 1790s including a hymn that was later published. Fully hallmarked for 18ct gold, London assay office, bust of King George, c1830. A truly magnificent piece. Condition: Good used condition overall, some age commensurate surface wear, there is a fair amount of enamel loss as is often the case on older pieces, both flowers are missing some enamel too, date letter slightly obscured.
