About the Item
This gold ring is engraved with the portraits of a married couple. Such rings were very popular in the early Byzantine period and often displayed the facing busts flanking a cross. Rings bearing the portraits of married couples had been popular since the Roman Imperial period, and the tradition continued into Byzantine times. On the present ring the woman wears her hair up, following the fashion set by empresses of the Theodosian period of the late 4th and early 5th centuries. The man has a short beard and his long hair is tied at the back. The left side of the composition was the more privileged position and was reserved for the husband. Such rings appear to have been symbolic tokens of marriage but were not used in wedding ceremonies. It was the joining of hands of bride and groom, not the exchange of rings that consecrated the marriage.
