Ancient Byzantine High Carat Gold Cabochon Garnet Amulet Ring with Hidden Cross
About the Item
Fine, museum quality unusual early Byzantine 6th-8th Century AD amulet ring with a hidden cross.
High circular flower form bezel with a domed top set with a superb cabochon garnet gemstone in an openwork setting with petal shaped filigree sides. The shoulders with foliate design. Granulation with beautiful age old patina framing the circular garnet. The surrounding petals of finely detailed twisted wire work technique. On the interior of the ring, a quatrefoil motif forms a cross pattee. The hidden crucifix on the interior suggests that this ring was created during the period when Christians were persecuted. The wearer would have shown the cross inside the ring to a fellow Christian as a sign of mutual devotion and beliefs. The flower motif of this ring supports the link to early Christianity as the Rose is associted with the Virgin Mary.
