About the Item

This rare memorial urn ring from the Georgian era (ca1750) is quite an unusual piece! Crafted in 18kt gold, the ring is richly detailed, and serves as a fine example of the mourning jewelry tradition. Framed between the gold band is a delicate urn-shaped centerpiece, which is petite in size and realistically portrayed. White enamel accents decorate the surface of the urn, along with delicate sparkling diamonds. The front of the urn curves to create a 3-dimensional appearance, accentuating its elegant shape. The diamond "lid" at the top serves as the handle of a hidden compartment on the back of the urn. When pulled open, the hinged door reveals a small hollowed space inside. A tiny glass locket window covers a small band of finely woven hair, the keepsake of a lost loved one. The disguised compartment feature of the ring is not immediately evident due to its seamless design, making it a subtle and secretive piece! Completing the design are scrolled accents at each pillar-style shoulder, and a curvy gold band in the back. An exceptional antique mourning ring, it is rich in history and would be perfect for the serious Georgian jewelry collector! The ring has a finger size 6, but could possibly be resized slightly (please inquire prior to purchase. Significant sizing is not recommended, to preserve the condition of the piece and integrity of the design). The urn at the center measures 1/2" tall, 1/4" wide, and 3/16" high. The gold band measures 3mm wide at the back. The ring remains in excellent antique condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. The enameled accents show some minor signs of surface wear, which is commensurate with age, and normal for an antique piece. However, the surface wear does not detract from the beauty of the design. All of the accent diamonds are intact. The hinged compartment feature is secure and in good working condition. The woven hair and glass locket cover remain intact and well-preserved. There is a natural patina on the surface of the setting, which is a normal characteristic of antique jewelry.
