Victorian Dragon Shakudo Plaque Ring

About

Shakudo is the use of mixed metal alloys and was originally used in Japanese armor and swords. Artisans would sometimes remove the Shakudo plaques from the armor and incorporate it into jewelry or art. It has become very collectible and quite unusual.

This impressive and substantial ring from the Victorian era (ca1880) is a wonderful example of the Shakudo craft! The ring consists of a large, oval-shaped Shakudo plaque, which rests atop a sterling mounting. The Shakudo plaque depicts an exotic Japanese dragon that appears to slither across the face of the ring. The dragon is crafted in vibrant 18kt yellow gold and is incredibly detailed, complete with individual scales, clawed feet, a spiked tail and body, and whiskered face. The reverse side of the Shakudo plaque is hallmarked with two Japanese characters stamped into the sterling back. A simple, smooth shank completes the fantastic design. The precise detail that forms the dragon motif is simply incredible, and the unusually large size of the ring makes a fabulous statement when worn!

The Shakudo plaque measures 1 3/8" tall, 3/4" wide, and rests 1/2" above the finger when worn. The ring is a finger size 7, but it could easily be resized up or down if desired.
