Victorian Renaissance Revival Blue Enamel Hidden Compartment Ring

About the Item

During the latter part of the 19th century (in the Victorian era) there was a resurgence of fine jewelry produced to imitate the classic Renaissance styles. These colorful designs were referred to as "Renaissance Revival," and they relied heavily on colorful motifs, gemstones, and vibrant enamel to mimic the 15th-17th century styles. A spectacular and very unusual Renaissance Revival ring from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This wonderful piece is crafted in 18kt yellow gold and has an elaborate enameled design along the surface with a unique hidden compartment feature. On the underside of the band, not visible when worn, is a hinged opening which allows you to place a small photograph or object. Antique designs that incorporate hidden compartments are often referred to as "poison rings," though they were also used to store small photographs and objects in memory of a loved one. A beautiful light blue enameled design graces the front of the ring, covering the outside of the compartment and the shoulders of the band. A engraved gold pattern flows throughout the enameled design, including scrolled detail and delicate leaf-like shapes. Both the hinged design and the light blue color are uncommon characteristics in this piece, making it a rare and unique find! Perfect for the collector or lover of antiquities, it would make a special everyday piece or addition to any collection. The ring has a finger size of 7.75. Due to the unique hinged feature, it unfortunately cannot be resized. The band width measures approximately 5.5mm at the front and 2mm at the back.

Wear consistent with age and use. The overall condition of the ring is excellent. There is some very minor wear to the surface of the enameling, however, it is minimal and only noticeable under close examination.
