About the Item

About the Ancient Coin The reverse side of the coin depicts Fortuna, the Roman goddess of chance or lot. She was the bearer of prosperity and increase and a controller of destinies. Often depicted as standing on a ball, she indicated the unpredictability of fortune and was often seen as an oracle. Like a fertility goddess, she was also associated with good harvests and women's fertility. The obverse side of the coin depicts Lucius Septimius Severus Pertinax, the Emperor of Rome from 193 to 211 AD. He was a despotic emperor who claimed the throne after killing Julianus, who had killed off Pertinax to claim the throne for himself. His claim to be the adoptive son of Marcus Aurelius, an increase in soldiers' pay, and permission for soldiers to marry, solidified his rule until his death in 211. The coin is set in a custom-designed 9 carat rose gold ring made from completely recycled materials. A round ruby is set just below each shoulder.
