About the Item

Dimension: 1,6 x 1,0 cm
Ring size: 7
Weight: 6,36 gr
This magical Roman intaglio, of Gnostic style, dates back to the 2nd-3rd century and is made of hematite: the engraving was placed on both sides of the stone, which is why it was inserted into a contemporary rotating 18k gold setting, so as to easily facilitate the vision of both faces. On the one hand, a man with a lion's head is depicted who, in the Gnostic context, could refer to Leontocephalus, servant of the solar divinity Mithras, in fact he had the task of supervising the movement of the stars and of which the sceptre he holds in his hand is an attribute, symbol of the power that time has over the whole world, to which is added the underlying figure of the crocodile, presumably a symbol of protection. On the opposite side, however, there is a human figure flanked by various attributes such as a sceptre and a helmet. Ultimately it is a stone that not only had the value of a decorative or aesthetic object, but, was worn for the magical powers attributed to it.
