Roman Garnet Intaglio (1st cent. AD) depicting a Cupid /Eros 18 kt Gold Ring

About the Item

This 18 Kt gold ring has been set with an authentic Roman intaglio, on garnet, which depicts a winged Cupid leaning on a torch. The central stone is surrounded by 18 diamonds for a total of 0.70 Cts. The Romans called him Cupid, from the Latin word cupidus: eager. The Greeks Eros. He was also revered as a fertility god. In later mythology Eros is the son of Aphrodite and Ares. Sometimes Eros is the personified of all attractions that evoke love and desire, heterosexual and homosexual. He is usually depicted as a beautiful winged youth or child, with his bow and arrows he shoots into the hearts of gods or mortals to arouse desire in them. In this particular stone, Cupid is leaning on a torch. For the ancient Greeks fire was something sacred, they used torches in their nocturnal rituals and in major sporting events, which had an almost religious connotation (the Olympics). The torch is therefore a positive symbol, it represents life and the illumination of our soul. Very often the angels, or Cupids, of the Roman stones or frescoes hold a torch similar to the Olympic flame, and are enveloped in a different glow from that of the other angels, most likely because the torch represents a light within another light. They seem to convey the strength and energy necessary not to give up in the face of life's difficulties, helping all those who need it, instilling in them the necessary courage to face their way.
