Amethyst Ring with Enamel Flower Blossoms & Shell Design

About the Item

There is nothing quite like the rich purple of a fine amethyst set in high karat gold - add black enamel and beautiful details to make it really special. Crafted of 18K yellow gold (with a small sized area at the back testing as 9K gold), the ring features a superbly colored amethyst with a wonderful cut. Black enamel accents adorn the tiny flower blossoms encircling the gem, with elegant shell details above each shoulder. Definitely Victorian in style, I have a hunch that this lovely ring was actually made in the Art Deco period. I love the oval shaped amethyst - the color is just what I look for, and the cut adds depth and sparkle. The top of the amethyst is smoothly polished (with a very wearable low dome) like a cabochon, but the underside is faceted, giving one the best of both cuts. In very good condition, the gem shows only very slight wear seen under magnification. I would estimate its carat weight to be approximately 1.3 carats, or so. Ten small gold flower blossoms with open work curve around the bezel-set amethyst, each centered by black enamel. At the top of each shoulder is a sculptural shell motif, with a further enameled flower blossom at the base of each dainty split shoulder. Under magnification I see a few tiny chips to the black enamel, but no major losses. They look lovely to the naked eye. Two of the flower blossoms are not connected to the bezel - one looks to have never been attached and I'm not sure if the other one was in the past. They certainly could be lasered if you desire, but they don't seem problematic to me, unless you are quite rough on your rings. The band is slender and dainty by design, approximately 1.8 mm at the shoulders and approximately 1.6 mm at the very back. There is a sized area where 9K rose gold was used, (seen in my macro photo - a pet peeve of mine when jewelers scrimp on sizing and repairs) and another slight seam, seen inside with magnification from the ring being sized up. It's not as noticeable to the naked eye as in my macro photo. Currently there is a somewhat oval egg shape to the band that is still very wearable and comfortable but could be adjusted by a jeweler. On my scale the ring weighs 2.16 grams. Size 8 on my ring mandrel, it's fitting just over a size 8.5 on me due to the slender band. It may be sized within reason by a good bench jeweler, keeping in mind the old sizing may require touch ups during the process.

  • Antique Diamond & Scarlet Guilloche Enamel Ring with Provenance
    Located in Danvers, MA
I’m happy to offer this charm filled antique diamond and enamel ring that also comes with wonderful provenance. I believe this piece is more suited for special event/occasional wear due to its age and delicacy. Crafted of silver and rose gold that tests around 9K to 10K, the ring features a striking scarlet red Guilloche enamel plaque set to the center with a fiery old mine cut diamond, surrounded by rustic and twinkling old rose cut diamonds. Another collet set rose cut diamond is set at each shoulder, with lovely period details. Definitely antique and with good provenance, this ring may originally have been a Georgian to early Victorian mourning ring, as I am not certain that the enamel plaque is the original center to the diamond surround. It is, however, extremely striking and beautiful in this piece. Measuring approximately 2.3 x 2.1 mm, the center diamond is a chunky old mine cut held within 5 rose gold prongs. I would estimate it at approximately .05 to .07 carats, though the setting doesn't allow for precise measurement of the depth of the stone. Very fiery, it contrasts beautifully with the scarlet color of the enamel. I would judge its color to be in the I-J range of near-colorless, though it faces up even more white. Completely eye-clean, it also has very good clarity under magnification and remains in very good antique condition. (it could use a bit of cleaning, though. I have not cleaned or polished this old piece, as some prefer to receive things in "as found" condition.) I do see some old solder around the base of the setting with magnification, and since one would usually expect a collet or bezel set stone, I do believe this is not the original diamond or setting. I'm sure it would have originally been a rose cut diamond - though I have to say that this mine cut has wonderful color and fire that works very well with the enamel work. I love the sunburst style of the Guilloche enamel (which is more crisp in real life than in my photos) - as well as the vivid glow of the scarlet color. It shows a little wear - mostly under magnification, but there is one small chip at an edge that can be seen with the naked eye. The enamel is still present in that spot, though, so it isn't terribly noticeable. The size of the enamel plaque is approximately 8 x 6 mm, and it moves slightly within its setting. Eighteen rustic rose cut diamonds in closed back settings create the charming halo surrounding the diamond set plaque. Varying in size and cut, most are very chunky, while two look more like old replacement flat cut diamond slices. Ranging in size from approximately 1.5 to 2 mm in diameter, they also range a bit in clarity and wear. Some are very clean and show no damage, and some show a few inclusions and chips/damage. Some are certainly old replacements. Together they provide just the right amount of period twinkle, glow and sparkle. On each shoulder is another rustic rose/flat cut diamond in a substantial silver setting, measuring approximately 1.8 mm in diameter. Prettily detailed elongated triangular silver ornaments extend down the center of the split shank shoulders from the edge of the diamond's settings, with the rose gold impressed to either side. The band is in good antique condition, showing some expected wear and signs of having been sized in the past. It gives the ring more of an oval shape (which is actually very comfortable since it is closer in shape to an actual finger.) A bit of old solder is visible inside the band at the join of each shoulder. The finished weight of the ring is 3.25 grams. Currently size 9.25, the ring can be sized within reason (a few sizes either way) by a skilled jeweler who is comfortable working with antique jewelry. Provenance: This ring came to me from the shop collection of Edith Weber Antique...

  • Heavy French 18K Gold Step Cut Diamond Ring with Hand Engraving, 1.73 ctw
    Located in Danvers, MA
Offered is a vintage, heavy 18K gold French ring with a large, sparkly square step cut diamond center, and old European cut diamond shoulders. Elegant hand engraving adorns each side of the ring, with the center stone set off by platinum. The estimated total carat weight is approximately 1.73 carats; French hallmarks remain on the outside of the band. This is a striking and substantial ring that I think works equally well on a woman or a man. It's strong, geometric setting makes it eye-catching without being fussy. Measuring approximately 6.8 x 6.5 mm the prong-set step cut diamond center stone is estimated to be approximately 1.25 (perhaps as much as 1.35 carats), though its setting makes it appear even larger. With near-colorless color judged to be in the H-I-J range, the diamond is bright and faces up quite white. It does have inclusions, including dark carbon, though most inclusions are visible with magnification. I can see a few with my naked eye, but they aren't distracting to me, and aren't easy to see when the ring is on the hand. There is a little wear to the girdle of the stone seen with magnification - some tiny nibbles along the outer edge. I'm very picky about diamonds, but I love this ring even with the imperfect stone. It would also be possible to replace the center with another diamond or a beautiful colored gem, if desired. Each shoulder has three sparkling graduated old European cut diamonds, for another estimated .48 carats, or so. Chunky and very fiery with open culets, these diamonds are also in the near-colorless range and are clean to the naked eye. Under magnification I see a few small imperfections in some stones. With a major presence on the finger, the face measures approximately 18 x 9.91 mm, including the upper shoulders. The rise off the finger is approximatley 5.62 mm to the table of the central diamond. The shoulders taper gradually from approximately 9.6 mm down...
