Antique Amethyst "Rose de France" Ring

About the Item

Rose de France is what the French call amethyst of this captivating lilac tone. Whereas "Siberian" amethyst has a deep tone and flashes red, Rose de France is more violet with a soft flash similar to fine sapphire. This antique Victorian ring is so superbly designed with its Tudor prongs and hand-engraved shoulders that, to me, it renders all other Victorian amethyst rings beside the point. This is one of those rings that hit me in the chest. That's the feeling I get when I see something incredibly rare and special, before I even know what it is, I know that it's SOMETHING. The craftsmanship is fastidious and clearly the work of a master. These prongs are inspired. The way they curl so gracefully over the girdle and onto the top facets; it's impeccable. And the stone. This is not merely a finely colored, evenly toned Rose de France amethyst; the cut is magnificent, with no "windowing," which makes the stone very bright and seductively flashy. Wear this ring within five feet of a candle and you will own the room. The gemstone is 17.4 mm x 13 mm x 25 mm and weighs approximately 10.5-carats. It's the perfect right-hand ring: wear it on your first finger in a meeting when you point at charts or whiteboards, it'll be like you are casting a spell. It's hypnotic, this ring. Victorian amethyst rings are a dime a dozen. I love amethyst and I love Victorian jewelry so I spend a (disturbing? alarming?) percentage of my life searching out the most unique specimens, and here you are. The ring is currently a size 4.75, has been previously resized and could be resized once again by your local jeweler.

Wear consistent with age and use. Beautiful condition. Under magnification there are *tiny* abrasions on a few facets and I am *not* downplaying this. To the naked eye the stone is perfect. And it's perfect WITH those abrasions, too. Evidence of prior resizing.
