Substantial Midcentury Amethyst Ring
About the Item
This is a perfectly proportioned, satisfyingly dense, and exceedingly well-made yellow gold and amethyst ring dating from the middle of the last century -circa 1960s. The sleek, aerodynamic lines are complimented perfectly by the soft satin-finish of the gold; as if it was sandblasted by photons. The natural oval-cut amethyst gem is a rich and regal purple: this is the amethyst that will make you understand why kings once wore amethyst.
The deep purple stone flashes red now and then, also blue. Yet despite this bit of showmanship from the stone, it is not a flashy ring. The 11mm x 8mm amethyst weighs just over 2.5-carats. The interior marks have mostly worn away; a vague "2 remains denoting the carat weight and what I believe to be the ghost of a metal fineness mark for 14K, but no maker's mark. The quality of this ring is such that any of the fine jewelry houses could have made it. Of course, if one of them did, surely something of their mark would remain.
Currently a size 8, this ring could be resized by your local jeweler.
