Ladies Pressed Glass and Sterling Flask

About the Item

Ladies pressed glass flask with sterling silver cap. Flask itself is made fully of glass with flat bottom. An elegant swirling design is shaped into the glass using a manual pressing method to eliminate any seams. The design wraps completely around the body of the piece, creating a criss-crossed appearance when looking at the piece straight on. This same swirling pattern is mirrored in the sterling silver lid of the flask. Refined and elegant piece that would be suitable for continued use or would make an excellent addition to an antique bar or barware collection. Size: 5" x 3 1/2" Flasks were first used after the invention of both hard liquor and the pocket in the 17th century. They were commonly used in American during the settlement of the west in the 1800’s when it was impractical to carry large containers of alcohol on long and dangerous journeys. Soldiers were another large clientele of the flask during this time, as alcohol provided both moral and physical aid on the battlefield. Their peak use was seen during Prohibition when the selling of alcohol was illegal in the United States. The flask enabled the discreet carrying and sharing of alcohol that was difficult to accomplish at this time. The common use of the flask began to die out after the end of Prohibition in 1933. Today, they are used as novelty items frequently given as gifts. Their rich history and decorative designs make them an item desired by many collectors today.
