Vintage and Antique Silver Serving Bowls and Tureens
Colorful serving bowls and tureens are important parts of any serveware set and can transform a table setting. These pieces are typically cast in silver or made of porcelain, echoing the design of serveware that was historically popular. Vintage and antique silver serving bowls and tureens were especially fashionable from the mid-17th into the 18th century for a style of dining that originated in France.
Rather than bring out single courses, all the parts of the meal in those days were placed on the table at once and revealed in a specific order, necessitating the equally popular serving dishes. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate arrived in the mid-17th century, requiring silverwares in which to serve them. Tureens proliferated in Great Britain and North America in the 18th century, thanks in large part to the culinary influence of France.
The word tureen first appeared in English at the beginning of the 18th century, derived from the French terrine, meaning “earthen vessel” (from the Latin terra meaning “earth”), as they were made from clay. These large covered dishes, which are usually oblong or oval-shaped and known for their almost helmetlike lids, kept soups and stews warm at the table and made it possible to serve guests elegantly with minimal fuss.
Aside from tureens, silver serving bowls can include wine coolers and assorted barware, champagne covers and caviar dishes. All of these pieces and their accessories are typically associated with the high-quality foods and drinks that are served inside of them.
