Russian Nicholas I Silver Creamer, Moscow, 1840

About

From the Romanov era, period of Tsar Nicholas I (1825-55), this large silver cream jug was made in the ancient capital of Moscow. Of rectangular outline with canted corners, the lobed lower section below a central band of repoussé flowers, the border similarly decorated, on raised foot, with wooden bracket handle and gilded interior. The cream jug is an excellent example of fine mid-19th century silver from Russia. Stamped maker’s Cyrillic initials IL, the Moscow mark of St. George slaying the dragon, 84, the Russian silver standard, the date 1840, below Cyrillic initials ND for Moscow assaymaster Nikolai Dubrovin (active 1822-1855) 6 ½ in. (16.6 cm) long; 5 in. (12.7 cm) high to top of handle.
