Ferdinand BERTHOUD Dumb quarter-repeating pocket watch Paris 1762 Gold 20 ct. Ferdinand Berthoud à Paris, No. 392, with Paris hallmarks for 1762. Very fine and rare 20 ct. rose gold dumb quarter-repeating pocket-watch. ( à toc & à tac ) Repeating on the case by depressing the pendant. Signed on the dial, back and dialplate. In very good condition. Diam. 44 mm. Quite exceptional for pocket-watches is the fact that the dial at the back is signed. This watch carries on the back of the dial the signature of Joseph Coteau. "Coteau & Thil". Joseph COTEAU was known as a leading enamelist of the finest French clocks - intricate enamel work and detail were a characteristic feature of his work. FERDINAND BERTHOUD exceptional timepieces carry the legacy of a dynasty of master watchmakers, which began in 1727 with the birth of Ferdinand Berthoud. A native of Val-de-Travers in Switzerland, he moved to Paris where he established himself as one of the most talented watchmaking engineers of his time. His place in history was assured thanks to his Marine Timepieces, which were capable of measuring longitude to within less than half a degree. The accuracy of the chronometers designed by Ferdinand Berthoud enabled France to challenge the maritime supremacy of England, and led to their creator receiving the coveted warrant of "Watchmaker-Mechanic to the King and to the Navy". A curious and passionate man, Ferdinand Berthoud was also a renowned theorist and talented writer. Today, his work, which was continued by his nephews and great-nephews, occupies a distinguished place in the history of the science and techniques of time measurement.
