1929 Hamilton "Square B" Art Deco, 17 Jewels, Beautiful Condition

About the Item

Let me introduce you to the Hamilton Square B Engraved! It is a mouthful! This 14 karat white gold filled Art Deco beauty was made for approximately 2 years, a very short run. Who is the Hamilton Watch Company, read below! Think Art Deco, think Roaring 20's, think the birth of a wrist watch, that's is where this watch is placed in historical context Hamilton Watch Company, What a story! Hamilton was founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and began producing pocket watches. From the very beginning, the focus was on quality and accuracy, and these principles had made Hamilton a coveted vintage American Watch to collect. In the early days of American railroads, there was no common method of timing and accidents were frequent. The precision of Hamilton pocket watches helped solve this problem and Hamilton timepieces soon received the title: The Watch of Railroad Accuracy. Like many early wristwatch manufacturers Hamilton entered the wristwatch “Derby” because of WW1. As an official supplier to the U.S. Armed Forces during WWI, Hamilton equipped hundreds of soldiers with the reliable timepieces so important during war. This prompted a shift in production from pocket watches to the more convenient wristwatch. World War I, also known as the First World War or the Great War, was a global war originating in Europe that lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. During the 1920’s and 1930’s which represent the early birth of wrist watches Hamilton was one of the leading manufactures in quality, design innovation. Hamilton’s well-known Piping Rock watch made its debut in 1928 and specially engraved versions were presented to the New York Yankees in celebration of their World Series win that year. Members of the team included Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, some of baseball's most famous players. This model is commonly called the “Square B” , they made two versions, one with a plain bezel and one with an engraved bezel. The both style were prone to premature wear on the bezel corners, this is called “wear through or brassing” . This survivor has none; this is one of my signatures in watch restorations. I look for “good bones” to restore. I pass up a lot of watches to get a case this good. This case is superb! This style Hamilton only made for two years. You could almost call it a limited production model. I elected to have the dial and hands refinished to its original status, it looks beautiful. The watch has a had a total tear down service, new crystal. The white gold-filled case has been gently polished by hand to bring out the luster of the 14-karat white gold fill. Considering that this watch is approximately 90 years old, well, that is remarkable. Use the pictures for additional condition descriptions. This case is pristine. The case measures 28.7MM across from 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock The case measures lug to lug approximately 34.5MM I have added a black 16MM Genuine Alligator band that was in the USA, not overseas in China, Thailand or Vietnam. The band is finished off with a bright high polished stainless-steel tang buckle. • 1920"s Art Deco Gruen Quadron 15 Jewel, Restored, 14KY Gold Filled
    By Gruen
    Located in Raleigh, NC
My shop was recently selected to supply vintage American watches for a premier movie starring some major actors and a world famous director. They were looking for authentic watches that would represent the time period from 1915-1926. I was selected because of my attention to detail and originality. It is a true story of events that took place during the 1920’s. This would of been a perfect watch style for the film. Gruen "Quadron Model 63" Men's Art Deco design wristwatch in 14K yellow gold fill, circa 1930. This Quadron model has a large stepped case with a recessed crown. It was priced at $52.50 in 1930. It is in excellent condition showing only a few tiny specks of brassing to the bezel corners and a little to the tips of the lugs. The case back is excellent and unengaged, it does have a tiny flea bite. Dial is very good. Case measures 38mm long and 24mm wide. The watch is powered by its correct 15-jewel Gruen grade 157 Quadron manual wind movement, just serviced and running strong. In years from the 1920s through the 1940s, the Gruen Watch Company of USA & Switzerland was one of the leaders in wristwatch design and quality, even working together with Rolex. In 1925, Gruen introduced the men's Quadron. Similar in concept to the women's Cartouche models, these were rectangular watches containing very high-quality 15-j or 17-j tonneau-shaped movements. A larger movement is generally more reliable and accurate, and is generally more rugged, than a smaller one of the same quality, so the Gruen Cartouche and Quadron, with their case-filling, purpose-built movements performed much better than the small, round movements used by most of their competitors at the time. Round movements were still used in the less expensive rectangular Gruen wristwatches...

We seldom see this model and this one is in exceptional condition. It is offered with an original Hamilton Buckle and with what we think was the original New, Old Stock Strap as well. The strap, while being new is to dried out to actually use. This watch can easily be worn every day and counted on to get you there on time, every time. Hamilton Watch Company History The wrong train, on the wrong track, at the wrong time at the end of the 19th century frequently resulted in disastrous train wrecks. In response to the critical need for accuracy on the nation’s railroads, laws were passed in 1891 establishing set standards of accuracy. All engineers and railroad workers were required to purchase and maintain their watches to keep accurate time based on set standards, about 30 seconds per week was the tolerance. This was the inspiration for The Hamilton Watch Company which was founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The company was started by a group of investors who were looking to create a high-quality, American-made watch. Hamilton quickly became a leading manufacturer of pocket watches, and by the early 1900s, the company was supplying watches to the US military. In 1917, Hamilton introduced its first wristwatch for service men entering the first World War. The wristwatch quickly became popular with both soldiers and civilians recognizing how practical they were. Hamilton continued to grow throughout the 1920s and 1930s, and by the 1940s, the company was one of the largest watchmakers in the world. Hamilton had exceptional engineers and designers and their watches were elegantly styled as well as dependable. As a watchmaker myself I consider Hamilton to be one of the worlds “best” watches. It was mass produced perfection. Even today, you can take 100 old Hamilton’s of the same model apart and shake them up in a bag and reassemble 100 watches that will work perfectly with almost no adjustment. This is an achievement. In the early 1930’s our family store in Los Angeles was a “Hamilton” Store. Even during the depression though Hamilton did not allow you to discount the price to sell a watch. Also, in the neighborhood was another Hamilton store and one day the owner sent in a “shill” to buy a Hamilton from us, someone gave them a slight discount. Well, that was all it took for Hamilton to “pull the line” from us. In those days the local jewelry supply houses sold you the watches and they were all told not to sell to us...
