Designed with 60 brilliant white diamonds in a double diamond row concept which is considered one of the most collectible of all examples for gem set bracelet watches of this style in this period, the present example is designed with carefully selected VS1 Diamonds , all well matched and represents one of the finest examples produced by the legendary firm during this period. As commercial air travel was made available to the general public and the concept of the “jetsetter” was born, fashionable accessories throughout the 1960s and early 1970s which could be worn night or day regardless of the event became a new necessity for contemporary society. Audemars Piguet recognized this new demand and as a result put into commission a very small select series of exceptional gem set creations such as the present example which was produced with a single row typically and only the most premier special examples having the double diamond row concepts making them extremely sought after compared to their more commonly produced design series which only features a single row of diamonds and hard enamel hour hands. Special attention to detail is also notable when examining the carefully woven rope textured bracelet which demonstrates the firms best in gold workmanship combined with the masterful ingenuity in innovation found with the present examples which deployed state of the art ultra thin movement technology as a means to give the present timepiece a great sense of high fashion luxury style to appear more as a piece of jewelry than that of a the standard concept of a wristwatch which one typically thinks of when conceptualizing a wristwatch. This is demonstrated by the mechanical winding crown which is on the reverse case back versus the side of the case where most traditional timepieces have their winding mechanism located at the 3 position traditionally. In addition, to the beautifully crafted bracelet, the bezel also demonstrates careful gem setting skills as obvious special attention to plan each diamonds location with graduated size diamonds appearing on the corner angles of the bezel and smaller brilliant round cut diamonds as it nears closer to the dial. In addition, it is also notable to mention the beautifully diamond set hour hands which add a further sense of high style that one would expect to see on only the best examples of the firm’s creations in this particular series. Adding further allure to this very special piece, it is also additionally interesting to note the very limited production locking mechanism clasp which boats the iconic AP logo on clasp that appeared for a very limited time only for a 10 year period before switching to the more standard logo exhibited on today’s creations. Condition In addition, the timepiece is also in perfect unused condition with no missing stones, near perfect dial with no discoloration and case with no missing diamonds or replaced stones. Furthermore, the timepiece has been recently serviced and is in perfect working condition as it also bold signatures on the dial and sharp hallmarks and serial numbers throughout indicating it was seldomly worn and is extremely well preserved given its 60 year old age.

The story of celebrated family-owned manufacturer Audemars Piguet and its universally acclaimed, widely coveted luxury watches begins deep in the Jura Mountains in western Switzerland.

The Vallée de Joux has been a haven of watchmaking since the late 18th century, when the residents of farming communities began creating timepieces during the winter months.

Jules Louis Audemars (1851–1918) and Edward Auguste Piguet (1853–1919), both natives of the region, were already deeply entrenched in the world of watchmaking when they joined forces to form a new house of horology near the end of the 19th century, an alliance that would be the start of a multigenerational family company. With complementary specialties within the field, Audemars and Piguet made the perfect pair in 1875: Audemars, the more technically minded of the two, oversaw production, while Piguet specialized in quality control and led the business and marketing parts of the outfit.

Audemars Piguet’s first major milestone came in 1892, when it created the world’s first minute-repeating movement for a wristwatch. (It was sold to Omega, whose origins date to 1848.) That was soon followed in 1899 with the Universelle pocket watch, a masterpiece of horology that boasted a perpetual calendar, minute repeater, alarm and chronograph with jumping seconds. It is still said to be the most complicated timepiece that Audemars Piguet has ever designed.

Between 1918 and 1919, both founders of Audemars Piguet had died and were replaced by their respective sons, incidentally both named Paul. Under the leadership of Paul Louis Audemars and Paul Edward Piguet, the watchmaker continued to innovate. It retained an ever-evolving technical focus and found new praise for its efforts, producing the world’s thinnest pocket-watch caliber in 1925, the first skeletonized pocket watch in 1934 and the world’s thinnest wristwatch in 1946.

When the quartz crisis of the 1970s left many watchmakers in the lurch, Audemars and Piguet found a creative solution, tapping the Geneva-born Gérald Genta to conceive the first-ever luxury watch in stainless steel. Launched at what would become the Baselworld watch and jewelry fair in 1972, the Royal Oak, with its octagonal face and integrated bracelet, would come to define the look of Audemars Piguet and revolutionize the luxury wristwatch industry, setting a standard that continues to this day.
