About the Item

For sale is an iconic Swiss Made Omega Constellation Automatic Chronometer with reference number 168.045, dating back to 1969 based on its serial number. The case measures 36mm wide by 40mm high, and seamlessly flows over into the integrated bracelet. Both the case and bracelet are entirely made of 18k yellow gold, and so is the dial: the "OM T Swiss Made T OM" can be found underneath the 6 O'Clock position, with OM standing for Or Massif or "solid gold" in French. It's a very hefty watch almost literally worth its weight in gold: the total weight of the watch is around 150 grams. Behind the original Omega plexiglass crystal, we find a gold tone dial with subtle horizontally brushed finish. Luminous black lacquered hands indicate the time on raised black and gold indices. A day-date window can be found at the 3 O'Clock position. The watch is powered by a high quality Chronometer-grade automatic movement, the Omega Cal. 751. The original yellow gold bracelet and clasp (1155/146) allow this watch to be worn on a wrist with a maximum circumference of around 19.5cm. Three links can be removed to decrease the size to 16.5cm. In order to increase the size past 19.5cm, spare links will have to be sourced online or at an Omega dealership. The example sold here is in good overall condition considering its age. The case and bracelet show normal wear marks all around, but no coarse damage. The case and bracelet were cleaned, but not polished in order to maintain the original shape. The dial has aged well, with some minor staining and a few marks here and there. The crystal is original, complete with Omega hallmark in the centre, and is in good condition still as well with normal wear marks but no coarse scratches. The crown is original too and bears the Omega logo. The watch received a full service at an Omega Authorised Service Center in Belgium on December 9 2022, and is working perfectly. Accompanying the watch is an original grey presentation box; sadly no original paperwork is present with this piece. A copy of the service invoice will be included, but private information from the previous owner will be redacted. It’s a celebrated part of Omega lore that the brand’s Speedmaster Professional Chronograph was the first watch to make a lunar landing. But the universal love for vintage Omega watches isn't confined to astronomers, and there’s more to the company’s heritage than the story of the Moonwatch.

The house’s origins date to 1848, when Swiss watchmaker Louis Brandt first set up shop. His sons Louis-Paul and César took over after his death, and in 1894, the pair developed an intriguing new movement.

Not only was it highly accurate, but every part was replaceable, making it easy for any professional to service. The Brandts called their movement the Omega, and as its popularity spread, they changed their company’s name to that of its flagship product.

In 1917, the British Royal Flying Corps designated Omega as an official supplier, and during World War II it became the principal watch supplier for the British forces and their allies. These commissions further strengthened Omega’s commitment to ensuring its products’ reliability under extreme conditions. In 1948, it launched the versatile Seamaster. Developed as a dive watch, the Seamaster proved its durability at high altitudes and freezing temperatures, as well.

Thanks in part to its rugged reputation and Omega’s links to the British military, it became James Bond’s watch of choice in 1995, appearing in GoldenEye and every succeeding Bond movie; it is set to return in 2021’s No Time to Die. Nevertheless, the most famous Omega by far is the Speedmaster, introduced in 1957. The first chronograph to display its tachymeter scale on the bezel instead of the dial for easier readability, it was quickly adopted by engineers and scientists.

Worn by Buzz Aldrin during the 1969 Apollo 11 lunar mission, it’s the only watch certified by NASA for extravehicular activity (space walks) — and, as far as we know, the only one approved by the Russian space agency, too.
