Bernard Epstein was born in Grodno Poland in 1910. He came to Worcester MA in 1921, where he studied art at the Worcester Art Museum School. He pursued his art studies in Boston, graduating with a B.A. from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and with a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Boston University. He continued his art studies in New York, where he attended the National Academy of Fine Arts in New York City, studying under the tutelage of Leon Kroll and Herbert Barnett. (2)
He was the Art supervisor for the Uxbridge Public Schools for over 30 years, retiring in 1970 to pursue his interest in watercolors, oils and pottery. He opened an art gallery and pottery shop in North Eastham, MA that he operated for 26 years, retiring in 1996. (3)

Painter, illustrator, etcher and muralist, Karl Yens was born in Germany and first studied with Max Koch in Berlin and, subsequently, with Benjamin-Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens in Paris. He was a successful active muralist in both Germany and Scotland before immigrating to the United States in 1901. After arriving in America, Yens continued to paint murals in New York City and Washington, D.C. before settling in Southern California where he lived and painted until his death in 1945.
Karl Yens exhibited widely and with success, including at the 1915 Panama-California International Exposition in San Diego, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, the Duquesne Club of Pittsburgh, San Diego Museum, the Orange County, California Museum, Astor Theatre in NYC and the Society of California Pioneers. About the artist.
Alexander Bercovitch was born in Kherson, Russia in 1891. In 1926 he moved to Montreal, Canada. He is known for a vibrant, expressionist painting style. His landscapes also show the strong influence of impressionism. His mediums are pastel, gouache, watercolour and oil. As a child he apprenticing in icon-painting with monks. He also studied at Jerusalem's Art School of Bezalel, the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, and the Bakst-Dobujiinsky school and Stiglitz Academy, both in St. Petersburg. He worked in Odessa and Moscow painting stage decorations, before moving to Turkestan to teach art. He was influenced by the German Symbolist Franz von Stuck, as well as David Burliuk, co-founder of the Russian Primitivist movement and Wassily Kandinsky. After moving to Montreal he worked in decorative painting and set design. In 1927 he participated in the annual Spring Show of the Art Association of Montreal, and in 1933 held his first solo exhibition. About the artist.
Clivette was born in Portage, Wisconsin, in 1868 as Merton Clive Cook, the youngest of five (four sons and one daughter). His father was a retired British sea captain, and his mother was an American of French, Scottish and Iroquois Indian stock.
He stayed with a circus for about five years, traveling all over the Western United States, Canada and Mexico. They did shows for the army forts, for railroad workers and on Indian Reservations.
Clivette settled in San Francisco in 1886, when he was offered a job as a reporter and theatrical writer for the San Francisco Call. He met Frederic Remington during this period. He was the first serious artist Clivette had met and he was an inspiration to him.
Clivette had done some drawing and painting on the road during his vaudeville years, he had a natural facility for it, and he had had some formal art training as well. He had had some training in Europe and was aware of the modern art movement in Europe. Later in New York he participated in symposiums and workshops at the Art Students League. Around 1910 he gave up his stage career and began to paint full time. He was about 40 years old and was to continue to paint vigorously and prolifically for the remaining 22 years of his life, His style can be identified with the Expressionist Movement, His subjects include portraits (some quite realistic, others more generalized) Indians and horsemen, laborers, gentlemen and vamps, jungle animals and birds, fish, seascapes and landscapes.
He was an active participant in the art world of New York. He was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. In 1923 he showed at the Ainslee Art Gallery at 677 Fifth Ave., in 1925 at the Spanish Society in Brooklyn and in 1927 he had a solo show at the New Gallery, 600 Madison Ave. That same year there was also a solo show of his work in Paris at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery, which included a catalogue. In 1929 he exhibited at the Art Center of the Roerich Museum in a group show of work from the collection of George Hellman. In 1930 he was in a show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, "Painting and Sculpture by Living Americans" which also included the work of Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, William Glackens, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, George Luks and Mark Tobey and sculptors Gaston Lachaise and William Zorach among others. Robert Kaess studied at the University of California under Margaret Petersen and Erle Loran, receiving his B.F.A. in 1948 and M.F.A. in 1950. He traveled in Europe from 1952-3 to continue his art studies and paint. In the late 1950's, he developed an allergy to oil paint and, not caring to paint in another medium, he returned to the University of California at Berkeley to study medicine. After graduation, Robert Kaess practiced medicine for almost thirty years but, in his short and successful career as an artist, he painted many fine and original paintings.
