"The Art Of The Links" 2017 DE ST JORRE, John
Located in Bristol, CT
DE ST JORRE, John [201] pp. Legendary Publishing & Media Group, Inc. Published for the members of The Links Limited Edition 2017 12"H x 9 1/2"W Illustrated from photographs by C. J. Walker The Links is a private club in New York City. It is located at 36 East 62nd Street on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. Charles B. Macdonald, a golf champion and founder of the United States Golf Association, started the Links in 1917 as a place where powerful members of the golf world could keep the true spirit of the game alive. The club was established in 1916-1917 by Charles B. Macdonald, in a building designed in the Georgian Revival architectural style by Cross & Cross. In the 1960s, it was "a preferred social gathering spot for America's most powerful chief executives." By 2010, it was still a "preserve of the old banking elite", but not all members were WASPs. While ostensibly a book about the club’s spectacular collection of artwork, the book also gives a fuller history than the smaller 2004 book. It begins with the story of how the adjacent townhouse blew up in spectacular fashion in 2006, damaging The Links. While tragic, it was also an opportunity for the club to refurbish. Among other things discovered during the repairs the club undertook were original hardwood floors that had been covered by carpets for decades and bookshelves hidden behind wood panels in the Sir Christopher Wren Room (which serves as the club’s library). The history also discusses the creation of a new wine room where members hold intimate private dinners. Many of the pictures and paintings among the art collection at The Links are not golf related. Many are nautically themed, including those of Commodore Robert Field...

"The Work Of John L. Volk Architect Palm Beach" 1937
Located in Bristol, CT
[45] pp. 1937 13 3/8" x 10 1/4" John Latham Volk (October 15, 1901 - February 20, 1984) was an Austrian architect who designed public buildings and private residences in and around Palm Beach, Florida from the 1920s until his death in 1984. Although there is no particular style exclusively associated with Volk, he worked with many styles from Mediterranean Revival to Modern. Volk was among a group of architects considered the “Big Five,” along with Marion Sims Wyeth, Addison Mizner, Maurice Fatio, and Howard Major, who defined Palm Beach style in the early twentieth century. After working on designs for the Rivoli and Capital Theaters in New York, Volk came to Florida in 1925 with a commission to design a $1 million office building and bank in Key West. The deal fell apart due to the 1926 hurricane and the collapse of the Florida real estate boom. Volk, however, saw the opportunity for growth in Florida and decided to move to Palm Beach. By 1926, Volk had established his own practice in Palm Beach. Architect Gustav A. Maass joined as a partner from 1927 to 1937. Volk's most significant commercial projects are the Royal Poinciana Plaza and additions and renovations to the First National Bank. Outstanding among his civic projects were the Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale, the Royal Poinciana Playhouse, and additions and renovations to the Everglades Club and the Bath and Tennis Club...

Framed Hand Painted Mandala Thangka on Canvas with 24K Gold
Located in TRUMBULL, CT
This framed "Mandala" thangka is hand painted on canvas with 24K real gold. Ornate frame and seven mandalas make it a unique piece. Earthy color tones and touch of gold makes it a stunning piece of artwork. Measurement of art without the frame: 19" x 14" A handout on process of making a thangka will be included with the purchase. Mandala represents "wholeness" and is also used as an aid in meditation. The term mandala has become a generic way of describing any circular geometric pattern. The word mandala originated from Sanskrit which means “Circle”. Early versions of the Mandala can be found in the Hindu faith where we would see geometric shapes representing deities. Buddhism took this concept one step further and today if you speak to someone in the Buddhist faith they will tell you that these paintings are in essence a 3 dimensional celestial palace with rooms that contains deities. Let’s call this a mind map, a map to help us further our spiritual journey. Our collection will focus almost entirely on Buddhist Mandalas, a Mandala by Buddhist standards will respect certain basic rules of composition and geometric proportion, although each painting you see is unique in its own way, we will try and cover some of these basic iconographic rules. A Mandala almost always consists of two elements, an outer circle combined with a square positioned inside. In most cases these circles or rings create a pure space protected from external impurities and negative forces. The number of these circles can differ from one painting to another. In almost all mandalas the outermost circle will show flames which commonly represents protection and the innermost circle with be lotus petals which is the Buddhist symbol for purity. This imagery is typical of Mandalas and Thangkas in general which is why almost all deities are seated on lotus thrones. The square represents this symbolic palace or mind map, which is mentioned in the previous section. Any Mandala will always contain a principle deity it can be painted or symbolized by a lotus flower in the case of the Kalachakra Mandala...
