Helen Hyde (1868-1919), printmaker and illustrator, was born in Lima, New York, but spent a cultured childhood in Oakland, California. At twelve she began art instruction under Ferdinand Richardt, but it ended abruptly two years later when her father died and her family resettled in San Francisco. Helen and her mother moved to Philadelphia and, after her graduation from Wellesley School, she returned to San Francisco and studied at the School of Design. Hyde studied briefly at the Art Students League in New York between 1888 and 1889. The following year she departed on a four year sojourn in Europe, which included studying with Franz Skarbina in Berlin, Rafael Collins and Albert Sterner...

Paul Albert Besnard, was an impressionist painter. In 1866, the seventeen-year-old son of artist parents began his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts Paris. In 1874, Besnard won the important Prix de Rome, with which the academy distinguished young talent. A portion of the scholarship is a stay of several years in Rome. Besnard married Charlotte Dubray, a sculptress, during this time in Rome. The couple lived in England, where Besnard exhibited at the Royal Academy London, between 1881 and 1884. He became involved with English portrait painting during this period, which had a lasting influence on his work.

Infanta, Floating Balance, Point in Time, and Visionary are monoprints with Chine collé from Suzanne Benton's Paintings in Proust series. This grouping also includes the dry-point etching with Chine collé. Infanta (edition of 10). The monoprints (unique prints) employ the collage technique, chine collé (glued paper). Collé papers are pre-inked and hand-painted. Dimensional printing plates emboss texture onto the prints. The plates are inked individually for each solo print. The images and collé papers are then laid onto the plate and adhere to the printmaking paper as the plate and paper run through the etching press.

A bright, colorful impression printed on Japanese mulberry paper, with an irregular bottom margin. Signed and numbered in pencil. Housed in a 18 3/8 4 x 19 1/2-inch archival mat, suitable for framing.

Elyse Ashe Lord was a British artist and illustrator who worked in watercolors and drypoint etching. She studied at the Heatherley School of Art in Chelsea. The first public exhibition of her work was in 1919. Her drawings were exhibited at the Brook Street Gallery in 1921.[ In 1922 she became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Various large exhibitions of her works were held during her lifetime.
Her images typically draw on the Art Deco movement and ideas of Oriental culture, despite the fact that she never visited the Far East. She was a popular artist, even during a time period when the art market, and decorative arts particularly, was suffering from the economic crisis of the 1930s. She lived in Bexley in Kent.
