A very important early work by Bertil Vallien b. 1938. Unique and monumental wall sculpture, hand painted and contour sawn wood. Made in Sweden 1966. One of a kind! The sculpture is depicting fishes in the water. It was commissioned by an optician in 1966. That is why the eyes are made of oval glass mirrors. They are also hiding the holes where you screw the sculpture to the wall. The sculpture would be great in a fish restaurant or in an indoor pool area. It will certainly make a statement wherever it will hang! A photograph depicting the artist in front of the sculpture is included (see image)! Fully signed and dated 1966 (see image). The sculpture is in 3 parts. The upper part is in one piece. The lower part is in 2 pieces. There are no problems hanging this on the wall. It is heavy but not that heavy. Measurements: The upper part, Lenght 226cm, height 68cm, 7cm deep. The lower part, Lenght 245cm, height 75cm, 7cm deep. As mounted as in the pictures: length 304cm, height 120cm. Total length if one put these pieces after one another, circa 475cm. You can put this sculpture on the wall with different combinations and variations. In 2017 Flint Institute of Arts in Michigan bought the "One million Dollar Boat". They paid one million dollars for the mixed media sculpture "Passage" made by Bertil Vallien. The flying mercury and the bronzes While he was still busy working on the fountain in piazza Maggiore, the papal delegate Cesi asked Giambologna for a statue to be placed in the courtyard of the Archiginnasio, seat of the ancient and prestigious Bolognese university; he should have painted a bronze depicting the god Mercury with his index finger stretched towards the sky, a symbol of the divine origin of knowledge, which would have served as a warning to all students. The project was never completed, but Giambologna elaborated a model preserved at the Civic Museum of Bologna, which is only the first of the numerous bronzes with the same subject made by the artist, defined precisely as flying Mercury. In later versions, the sculptor transformed Mercury into a much more dynamic figure reaching upwards, as if ready to take flight, giving it an unprecedented freedom of movement and lightness. When he returned to Florence, the sculptor certainly proposed it to the Medici, who enthusiastically immediately ordered one to be sent to Emperor Maximilian II of Habsburg, as a diplomatic gift for the ongoing negotiations of the wedding between Francesco and Giovanna, sister of the sovereign. Giambologna replied with the two bronzes preserved in Vienna and Dresden and in 1580 cast the large Mercury now exhibited in the Bargello, originally intended for the loggia of the villa of Cardinal Ferdinando dei Medici to crown a fountain placed in the center of a magnificent decorative complex; the only variant with respect to the previous examples is constituted by the head of Zephyr placed under the foot of the god and from which a breath of wind blows it upwards, accentuating the sense of immateriality. In addition to the successful invention of the flying Mercury, Giambologna acquired immense fame by making numerous other bronzes for the Florentine collectors of the time; his first patron, Bernardo Vecchietti must certainly have owned many, given to him in part by the sculptor in exchange for his protection, but around the 1880s it can be said that there was no collector who did not aspire to own a work by Giambologna, especially those of small format. The development of this trend in Florence is largely due to the artistic passions of the Grand Duke Francesco I, who with the creation of environments such as the Studiolo in Palazzo Vecchio and the Tribuna degli Uffizi, provided new criteria for the exhibition of the works, pushing all collectors to imitate his extraordinary collection. In the Studiolo, in addition to the painted tables that decorated the doors of the cupboards filled with all kinds of things, there were 8 niches containing bronze figures of divinities; Giambologna painted the one depicting Apollo (1573-75), with the characteristic serpentine pose and beautifully finished. The placement of the statuette in the niche was no longer an impediment to the plurality of views as Giambologna endowed it with a sort of mechanism that allowed it to rotate. Statuette of a naked woman sitting in patinated plaster of Paris; plaster of Paris, is a very resistant material, used since ancient times, it was used by the ancient Egyptians as a binder in the construction of the pyramids and is used in sculpture for its strength, the name is linked to the ancient quarries of Montmartre in Paris; the statue is a work of the famous Belgian sculptor and bronze artist Joseph Zomers which he executed between 1915 and 1920 and whose signature is on the pedestal. The woman is represented posing with ill-concealed malice and shows without reticence her body with a thin erotic veil, the artist has not executed the face precisely to accentuate a mysterious charm; it is a figure of harmonic proportions that takes into greater consideration the erotic connotations, however, a refined and elegant eroticism that presents itself in a courteous manner, subtle and suggestive but at the same time provocative and irreverent; the woman, in her most intimate dimension, as a naked presence, defenseless but seductive, becomes the embodiment of the poetic essence of the artist, the emblematic figure of his aesthetics. Joseph Zomers was born in Liege in Belgium in 1895 and died in 1928; he studied art in Maredsous (Belgium), many of his works are permanently exhibited at the Musèe de Liège; Zomers is well known for his public monument "Tchantchès" in Liege.
