Francis Elliot Voyle - British 1916 portrait oil painting Newlyn School artist
By Harold Harvey
Located in London, GB
A fine oil on canvas by Harold Harvey which depicts a portrait of Francis Elliot Voyle. It was painted in 1916. It is a super oil painting of a seated gentleman with a top hat and cane. Great brushwork. Signed and dated lower left. Provenance. Cornish collection. Condition. Oil on canvas, 24 inches by 18 inches unframed and in good condition. Housed in an ebonised frame 30 by 24 inches framed. In good condition. Harold Harvey (1874–1941) was a Newlyn School painter who painted scenes of working class Cornish fishermen, farmers and miners and Cornish landscapes. He was born in Penzance and trained at the Penzance School of Arts under Norman Garstin and the Académie Julian in Paris (1894–1896). Harold Charles Francis Harvey was born to Mary Bellringer Harvey and Francis McFarland Harvey on 20 May 1874 in Penzance. His father was a bank clerk. During his youth, he was home schooled. From 1894 to 1896, he studied art at the Academie Julian in Paris under Norman Garstin. In 1896, he studied at both the Académie Delecluse and the Academie Colarossi. Prior to 1911, Harvey lived in Penzance. In 1911, Harvey married fellow artist Gertrude Bodinnar. They first met when Gertrude posed for Harvey. She discovered that she had artistic talent and became an artist in her own right in a wide range of visual and textile arts. The married couple lived in Newlyn at Maen Cottage. Friends of the Harveys included Laura Knight, Harold Knight, Annie Walke, and Father Bernard Walke of St Hilary Church. Late in his life, he converted to Catholicism. He died in Newlyn on 19 May 1941 and was buried in Penzance at the St Clare Cemetery. Gertrude lived in their cottage until 1960 when she moved into a St Just nursing home. She died six years later. After completing his schooling in Paris, Harvey returned to Penzance and began working with Norman Garstin. His works included landscapes and life settings of his native Cornwall, religious themes and interiors. He used oil and watercolour paints. From 1909 to 1913, he was an Associate of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art, Conwy and, in 1910, he was a member of the South Wales Art Society. From about 1910 and into the early 1930s, he was a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists, particularly with artists from the Lamorna valley...

Portrait of a Yawning Dachshund - Animal 1915 art oil painting
Located in London, GB
Is there anything more cute than a dog yawning? Especially a gorgeous little Dachshund? I think not. Painted in 1915 and signed G A C, this super little painting is a profile view of a seated conker brown Dachshund. He is caught in the middle of a great big yawn, eyes blissfully closed, ready for a nap on someone's lap. The light from the right is highlighting the dog's head, ear, pink tongue and fore legs, beautifully accentuating its features and anatomy. The palette and brushwork are superb. The background fades downwards from dark to light, making the dog stand out perfectly. This is a superb 1915 oil painting of a lovely little yawning dachshund needing its forever home and perfect for all the dog lovers out there. Signed with initials lower right G.A.C 1915. Provenance. Antique Ruby, Diamond, Pearl Luckenbooth Heart Crown Circle Brooch, Circa 1910
Located in London, GB
An early 20th century, Luckenbooth double witch's heart brooch, with one heart set with Burma rubies and the other set with old-cut diamonds, in grain settings, surmounted with a coronet, set with three, natural seed pearls, above a row of old-cut diamonds, in grain settings, with a knife edge circular surround, set with alternating rubies and old-cut diamonds, in claw settings, mounted in 14ct gold, with the grain set diamonds in silver-upon-gold. American, circa 1910. Luckenbooth brooches are traditional Scottish love tokens. They are usually a heart shaped brooch, often with a crown or coronet above one heart, or two intertwined hearts, with similar motifs to the Claddagh ring. European Heart-shaped brooches date back to late medieval period but this design probably did not appear in Scotland before the 17th century. It became very popular in the 19th century, featuring in the ranges of Scottish manufacturing jewellers, for the Highland outfitter and tourist trades. They are typically made of silver, although gold heart brooches were made for wealthy people and may be engraved or set with stones. The name comes from the Luckenbooths of Edinburgh. Luckenbooth is a Scots word for a lockable stall or workshop. Originating in the 15th century, they were the city's first permanent shops, situated on the Royal Mile near St. Giles Cathedral. Initially housing mainly silversmiths and goldsmiths. They were demolished in 1817. The brooches were often given as a betrothal or wedding gift. It might have been worn as a charm, by a nursing mother to help her milk flow or be pinned to a baby’s clothing. It was also known as a witch-brooch to protect children from evil. By the mid-18th century, Luckenbooth tokens featured heavily as trade silver...

Danseuses a la barre - Impressionist Figurative Pastel - Pierre Carrier-Belleuse
By Pierre Carrier-Belleuse
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed figurative pastel on canvas circa 1910 by French genre painter Pierre Carrier-Belleuse. The work depicts three ballerinas wearing white tutus, warming up in a studio. Carrier-Belleuse was a contemporary of Edgar Degas and they exhibited simultaneously at the major Salons in Paris. This classic example evokes the Belle Epoque period in french history and is superbly executed. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 29"x24" Unframed: 26"x21" Provenance: Private French collection Pierre Carrier-Belleuse studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Alexandre Cabanel and the interior decorative artist Pierre Victor Galland. He started out as an oil painter and produced genre compositions, such as his Final Rendezvous. From 1885, however, he opted to work exclusively in pastel, producing a large number of sketches and portraits but always remaining faithful to his earlier genre compositions. Examples include Pierrot, Harlequin, Woman with Cat. The periodical Figaro Illustré published a large number of his sketches of dancers, a recurrent theme throughout his work. From 1875, Pierre Carrier-Belleuse exhibited frequently at the Paris Salon, receiving an honourable mention in 1887 and being awarded a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889.
