“ We come spinning out of nothingness, scattering stars like dust.” – Rumi Physics and astronomy inspire my artwork. As an artist I create mostly from an intuitive place while scientists’ work is of an empirical nature. I would like to be part of the link that bridges the gap between art and science. On this path I observe the micro and the macro universe, two sides of a natural polarity that together comprise a unified whole. This endless expanse is interconnected and entangled as energy waves activate all form; nothing is ever static. Whether we actually see it or not energy infiltrates all things. Dark matter that we cannot see occupies approximately 84.5% of the universe; we know of it because of its gravitational field only. Since infinite space surrounds us, I am intrigued by the concept of ambiguous spaces, such as space within space, suggestive of multidimensional space, and interstitial space, the space between matter. Energy and space make up our universe. In my current work I use drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video, multi-media and installation as my forms of expression. Sometimes the work demands that I include the figure other times it does not. Upon discovering a weathered steel drum that had been warped to resemble the sleeve of a garment, artist Gordon Chandler was inspired to embark on a series of kimono sculptures formed from found metal scraps. With an eye to the aesthetic possibilities of this humble material, Chandler invests the reclaimed steel with sculptural fluidity and a wry sense of form. Flattened with the center portion rolled out and the sides left open, this discarded barrel takes on the look of a miniature jacket. Coated with a mint green finish, the eroded metal appears as draped fabric, folded back to form a simple collar. The sculpture is finished with the artist's initials stamped...

In his ongoing series of memory jugs, Thompson adorns stoneware vessels with a kaleidoscope of ceramic shards, found objects, and pocket-sized trinkets he collected over the course of his life. Also known as forget-me-not jugs or spirit jars, memory jugs are African American folk art objects that honor a loved one who has recently passed. Small tokens and mementos of the deceased are gathered and affixed to the exterior of a jug or vase, an abundance of memories that celebrates a life lived to the fullest. Michael Thompson applies this tradition to his own practice, creating tactile assemblages of this and that. Formed in the manner of collage, each jug honors the lost memories of generations past and his own memories of personally discovering each item. Roy Lichtenstein's works were often inspired by comic characters. They were angsty women, often appearing to be in distress. In this particular work, a beautiful, fraught woman with a furrowed brow grasps a telephone in both hands as she says "Ohh ... Alright ..." Lichtenstein lets us imagine the back story - and what might happen next. Kaplan's sculpture is a direct reference to this Lictenstein's iconic pop art painting of 1964.
