Reg Butler Abstract Figurative Signed "Manipulator"
By Reg Butler
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY
"Manipulator" is an abstracted figurative drawing in charcoal and graphite. The figure seems to be "manipulating" some object it holds without visual clarity as what that object is leaving it up to the viewer to fantasize about its intent. The drawing has a monumentality to it that speaks of Butler’s influence by Henry Moore, for whom he worked at one time, and echoes the style of the sculptures that Butler created. Butler most often used the female figure in his sculptures and drawings and although it is not certain, this drawing may be of a female figure engaged in some hand work with perhaps a mechanical toy that resembles a bird.
Butler trained as an architect and worked as a blacksmith before becoming Henry Moore’s assistant and developing his own talent as a sculptor. His first solo exhibition was held in 1949 at the Hanover Gallery in London. In 1952 he exhibited at the Venice Biennale and in the same year won a much publicized competition for a Monument to the Unknown Political Prisoner which, however, was never made. After winning the 'Unknown Political Prisoner' competition in 1953 he became one of the best known sculptors during the 1950s and 1960s, and also taught at the Slade School of Art.
Reginald Cotterell Butler (28 April 1913 – 23 October 1981) was an English sculptor born at Bridgefoot House, Buntingford, Hertfordshire to Frederick William Butler, formerly a police constable, and Edith Barltrop. His parents were the Master and Matron of the Buntingford Union Workhouse. His father was a relative of the poet William Butler Yeats; Edith was of Anglo-French descent.
Butler studied and lectured at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London from 1937 to 1939. He was a conscientious objector during the Second World War, being exempted from military service conditional upon setting up a small blacksmith business repairing farm implements. Butler's later work consists of lifelike models of female figures, such as Girl on a Round Base, that have something in common with Hans Bellmer and the sculpture of Allen Jones and prefigure the work of Ron Mueck...

"McDonald's Hamburgers Invading Japan/Self-Portrait", Watercolor, Figurative
By Masami Teraoka
Located in Detroit, MI
"McDonald's Hamburgers Invading Japan" is a delightfully inventive comic self-portrait by the creative genius Masami Teraoka. He has presented himself dressed in the traditional kimono robe and the artwork is in the famous Ukiyo-e style. Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; and erotica and sometimes humorous characters. The term ukiyo-e (浮世絵) translates as "picture[s] of the floating world".
This delightful watercolor self-portrait, comments on the problematic relationship between the United States and Japan and the Americanization of his country in the work, utilizing subtle pun humor that is the hallmark of Japanese culture. As Teraoka explains, "the character 'maku; means spread, 'donald; means screaming, 'do' and 'han' mean often, and 'Han' also means obnoxious or annoying. 'Burger' sounds like 'Baka' which means stupidity."
This work was originally purchased by filmmaker Eric Saarinen...

Alexander Raymond Katz, Hungarian / American (1895 – 1974)
Alexander Raymond Katz was born in Kassa, Hungary, and came to the United States in 1909. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. In the late 1920s, he worked as a director of the Poster Department at Paramount Studios. He was appointed the Director of Posters for the Chicago Civic Opera in 1930.
During the Great Depression, notable architect Frank Lloyd Wright urged Katz to become a muralist. In 1933, he was commissioned to paint a mural for the Century of Progress exposition in Chicago. In 1936, he painted the mural History of the Immigrant for the Madison, Ill., post office. Katz’s works were included in various exhibitions and now are part of several museum collections, including those of the Art Institute of Chicago; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; and the Jewish Museum, New York. His murals, bas-reliefs and stained glass designs adorn more than 200 Jewish synagogues in the United States.
Katz and other Jewish artists in Chicago who expressed Jewish and Biblical themes were inspired by the artist Abel Pann (1883-1963). Pann, who is regarded as the leading painter of the Land of Israel, exhibited in the Art Institute of Chicago in 1920.
Early in his career, Katz began to explore the artistic possibilities inherent in the characters of the Hebrew alphabet. He developed aesthetic and philosophical interpretations of each letter and became the leading innovator and pioneer in the field of Hebraic art.
Katz applies this concept in the woodcut Moses and the Burning Bush. Hebrew letters appears in Moses’ head, his cane and inside the flame. The initial of Moses’ name crowns his head. The letter in the flame is the first letter of the name of God. A combination of images and Hebrew letters appeared commonly in illustrations of the scene Moses and the Burning Bush in the Haggadah, the book of Passover.
The symbolism of the burning bush corresponds to the motifs of A Gift to Biro-Bidjan. Among the fourteen participating artists were notable Chicago modernists Todros Geller, Mitchell Siporin...
