Icewood Ancient Kauri stump sculpture is a series of timeless colletables. Each one will give a different perspective of the unique beauty of Ancient Kauri. Ancient Kauri or Swamp Kauri refers to Prehistoric Kauri forests, buried and preserved in peat swamp up to 50,000 years ago in New Zealand’s North Island by an unexplained act of nature at the end of the last Ice Age. The kauri trees have survived the centuries underground, sealed in a chemically balanced environment that has preserved the Kauri timber in perfect condition. The Kauri trees grew for nearly 2000 years before they were buried. Some have a girth of around 40 feet, and a total height of nearly 200 feet. Ancient Kauri wood is the oldest workable wood available in the world. Ancient Kauri wood is extremely attractive and beautiful. The grain and tones of the Kauri wood has an extraordinary shimmering iridescence. The glow of Ancient Kauri adds to its beauty and illustrates that Ancient Kauri is a special, gorgeous timber. Each piece is distinctive with the structure and grain creating an unparalleled piece of beautiful furniture. Inspired by Mother Earth, each furniture piece retains the natural shape, grain and character of the original kauri tree when it was buried in last Ice Age. Reflect takes its name from the way the base mimics the changing landscape of Fiordland in the South Island of New Zealand. The non-geometric form is reflected on opposite sides yet as you move around the table, the perspective and angles change just as they would on Milford Sound. The Reflect Coffee Table is made from sustainable ancient totara trees that have fallen naturally into rivers and preserved for hundreds of years under sediment layers before natural water erosion exposes them. We rescue these trees and continue their journey to become a cherished piece of functional art. The trees location co-ordinates are inscribed on a stainless steel Tréology tag and attached to the table, connecting the owner to a unique piece of New Zealand nature. Totara is a native tree of New Zealand. It was the primary wood used in Maori carving and to make waka (war canoes) in traditional Maori boat building. The organic live edge slab expresses the raw beauty of the wood and showcases the majestic way in which Mother Nature crafts this wonderful material. A brushed stainless-steel base was chosen to both compliment and highlight the totara’s natural beauty while also presenting a visual reference to where this timber was rescued. This statement piece features the wabi-sabi effect of celebrating the imperfections of naturally felled totara timber hewn into live-edge slabs, butterfly joins and stainless steel, wire-base, sculptural legs. The timber slab has the saw marks from the mill that have been de-burred and sanded so it is pleasant to the touch. The timber is finished with a hand-rubbed, low V.O.C. natural oil to bring the gorgeous wood grain to life. Handmade in Christchurch, New Zealand.
