"This is the first, perhaps last Findus, entered into the history of art," writes Vespignani about his only "dead and frozen" still life.
In his humorous writing, he described how, in the 1960s, he wanted to paint an "alive, remembering the sea, wriggling like a freshly caught fish" nature, to distract himself from his "murderous dead". But the result was quite different, contrary to his intentions. Because of his being a "realistic painter, or rather obsessed nerista", portraying the alive nature meant seeing and reproducing the gradual decay of the small group: "from the stage of cheerful youth (...) to the cadaverous dissolution."

Dino Grandi (Mordano, 1895 - Bologna, 1988)
Dino Grandi was an Italian politician and diplomat, who went down in history for the presentation of the homonymous agenda to the Grand Council of Fascism on 25 July 1943 which led to the dismissal of Benito Mussolini. He was foreign minister, minister of Grace and Justice and ambassador to London of the Kingdom of Italy.
In 1943 Dino Grandi moved to Spain and Portugal, where he resided until 1948. The forties were particularly hard: in Portugal he gave repetitions of Latin while his wife worked as a milliner to survive. Luck returned in the 1950s when he had representative positions for Fiat. During the same period he was a regular consultant to the US authorities, in particular to the ambassador in Rome, Clare Boothe Luce...

Ernst Barlach (1870- 1938), a German expressionist sculptor, printmaker and writer. His participation in the war made him change his position, and he is mostly known for his artworks protesting against the war. Barlach trained under French artists and produced Art Nouveau-style sculpture and works on paper, but at first unable to find success. This led to a trip to Russia where the artist began creating figurative sculptures inspired by early Gothic art, carving spiritual and emotional themes from hard-woods and bronze casts. Barlach's fame increased after the war, he received many awards and became a member of the prestigious Preußische Akademie der Künste ( Prussian Art Academy) in 1919. Suggesting theatrical mood, theatrical staging, stage, costume ideas and stage colors, intellectual references (Orson Welles and Rex Whistler), the Italian dramaturg asks the collaboration of the yung and talented costume designer, Maria De Matteis.
Under the supervision of Luchino Visconti, Gerardo Guerrieri signs the direction of Vita col padre, by Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse (premiered on January 28, 1947, Teatro Eliseo, Rome). These letters refers to all preparations and adaptations for the theater, from the stage to the costumes.
