Josiah Wedgwood, who founded the Wedgwood company in the mid-1700s was an avid shell collector.
Under his management, the Wedgwood factory made several shell-shaped creations, including the pieces in this pattern, which appeared for the first time circa 1790.
Each piece in this set is made of pearled creamware in the shape of a shell, and each piece is painted with exquisite gilding.
