Achik’ and the Desert IV

In "Dreams of the Jaguar’s Daughter," Achik' is the spirit of a young immigrant who guides us through her memories of the journey north. The artworks in this series are composed from documentation of immigrants' journeys in the 2018 Caravan using 3D scans, drones, interviews & 360 footage. The Mask is the face of the series’ main character, Achik’. The mask itself is derived from original Mayan artifacts from the Museo Popol Vuh in Guatemala City. This artifact was 3D scanned during the research phase of the documentary, the mask was then extracted from the scan, re-sculpted, re-textured and modified by the artist. In essence, Achik’ Mask is a digitally resurrected ancient Mayan artifact that gives life to a 21st century story-telling spirit. The proceeds from the first sale will fund the next phase of Salazar-Caro’s award-winning Surreal VR trilogy, Dreams of the Jaguar’s Daughter, presented at the Tribeca Film Festival. In recognition of this patronage, the first collector of the project will receive an additional artwork, a 3D Printed Bronze Mask, pictured here.

Metaglyph roughly translates to “beyond symbol” — an artwork representing the interconnected relationship between object materiality and digital existence. For as long as humans have told stories, we’ve been interested in objects that exist at the border between worlds. From ancient mythology to modern science fiction, our archetypal stories are filled with magical objects that serve as keys, black mirrors of culture and false identity, secret weapons with hidden powers. These NFT tokenized artworks use multiple techniques — ranging from digital simulation technology to 3D modeling to glitch — to probe the boundaries and consequences of our digital and analog desires.

The goal is not to replace reality, but to return to and enrich it. When we step through the looking glass — when we board the vessel — what will we see?

“These artworks are vessels that serve as a link between the familiar and the unknown. It’s the butterfly pinned to the board, and the butterfly rising above it. Not just the shark’s tooth, but its bite.”
