Daylily Dive

Daylily Dive

Spicebush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus). Ulster County, New York, USA. 2020-08-01. A spicebush swallowtail dives deep into one of my garden daylilies during the summer of 2020. I had just returned home from a remarkably unproductive day of photography in the field. Dejected and tired, I was halfway into the house when a black fluttering in the sky stole the last bit of my attention. This individual descended from the treetops and fluttered from blossom to blossom in my garden, diving into each one for a taste. It was something I had never really seen before, a butterfly skipping over the nearby bee balm and milkweed to fully enter a large flower like this. Needless to say, I was grateful to receive this wonderful 15 minutes of observation that was happened upon purely by chance. I guess that this was a brief lesson in humility and observance. No matter which exotic locales I visit, or how much I've spent on gear, or how many hours were devoted to a search, the potential for beauty and fascination is everywhere. Even in my front yard.
