Portals

This work begins the series which is not a triptych but a progression. The artist takes the word “Portals” and makes it into an assemblage of different components. This work is about masks and masking, how we present ourselves and interact with the world and others. The complexity of the work arises out of simple rules. The artist didn’t start with an idea for how he intended the work to develop. Rather, the work itself led him towards the idea. He began simply with the letters of “Portals” themselves. This work is rooted in graffiti and the idea of pushing letters to create new forms. At what point do you break the letters completely? The artist wants to remove the viewer from the compulsion around needing to read the letters. As is true in graffiti, perhaps the viewer does not need to decipher it at all. He didn’t choose the marks, the marks chose and guided him.
