Depcited is a boy busy fleaing a dog. The boy sits on a chair with the dog on his lap. On a table on the right there is a book and a pen. On a wooden bench lies the boy's hat.
What is unique about this painting by Ter Borch, is the relationship that is depicted between human and animal. Mostly animals like dogs where depicted as an attribute in paintings in the 17th century, and sometimes used to symbolize certain character traits. This boy is lovingly caring for his dog, which he is giving his full attention.
Another interesting detail is that Ter Borch's brother Moses, was probably the model for this painting. Ter borch often used family members as models for his paintings. Moses was also a very talented painter and draughtsman.
Several copies of this work by Ter Borch are known. One of these copies is in the collection of the Dutch Rijksmuseum (Image included in the image gallery (last image)).

Renoir (1841-1919) was, along with Edgar Degas, Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, a founder of the Société Anonyme Coopérative des Artistes, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs and a key organizer of the 1870s Impressionist exhibitions. He is best known for his renditions of the sensuous and monumental bathing nudes that he produced from the 1880s onward, many of which were inspired by the works of Titian, Rubens, and 18th-century French painters such as Boucher and Fragonard.
Like many of his contemporaries, Renoir embraced printmaking as a medium that allowed for more freedom of expression and experimentation. Ambroise Vollard, the eminent Parisian dealer and publisher, and Auguste Clot, the famed lithography printer, were both extremely instrumental in Renoir's foray into printmaking. They greatly encouraged and facilitated his practice of the medium. Vollard met Renoir during the height of Renoir's career and saw the opportunity for lithography to help disseminate the artist's ever popular work, and Clot worked closely with Renoir to masterfully capture the delicate quality of his pastels in color lithography.
Renoir began producing lithographs and etchings in the late 1880s and created an oeuvre over the following two decades consisting of 25 etchings and 29 lithographs, many of them commissioned for various albums or books. His most famous prints reproduce popular compositions he had established in earlier paintings. The current lot is based on an 1893 oil and pastel painting which represents the artist Berthe Morisot's daughter pinning a flower on her cousin's hat. An important private collection
Born in Ireland he went to England about 1758, and in 1765 when he was living in the Great Piazza, Covent Garden, he obtained a premium of twenty-five guineas from the Society of Arts for a landscape in oil. He was a Member of the Society of Artists and contributed forty-five works to its exhibitions between 1760 and 1776, nearly all landscapes and topographical views, but including 'The Italian and British Quack Doctors', 'The Amorous old Beau' and 'The Procuress'. These were probably of the same nature as two of three pictures done by him in imitation of Hogarth which, says Edwards (Anecdotes of Painting) "are nothing but mere representations of vulgar debauchery". In 1777 he had two works exhibited at 'The Exhibition or Grand Museum of Arts and Sciences at the Great Room, Royal Exchange, Strand. Pugh's intemperate habits hastened his death which took place shortly after 1788. There is a large landscape by him in the Lock Hospital, London and two views of London Bridge were exhibited in the Grosvenor Gallery...

John Downman was a fashionable portrait painter in the second half of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth. He was born in Ruabon, North Wales, the son of Francis Downman, an attorney of Devonshire stock, and his wife Charlotte, daughter of Francis Goodsend, the private secretary to George I. In 1768 John became a pupil of Benjamin West and the following year attended the Royal Academy Schools. He showed his first portrait at the RA in 1770 and his first subject painting in 1773, exhibiting there until 1819. From 1773-4 Downman, by now married, studied in Rome in the company of Joseph Wright of Derby.
By 1777 Downman was living in Cambridge, but the following year set up a studio at Bedford Street, Covent Garden. From 1779-1804 he lived at increasingly fashionable London addresses, including Bond Street, Jermyn Street and Piccadilly. Downman painted few large-scale oil portraits...

The noble lady displays a stern and proud expression, a smile which has just been mentioned but full of determination; the well-erected and authoritative pose is softened by the habit of the red ribbon woven in the hair, reminiscent of the brocade of clothes, according to an interpretive taste typical of Delle Piane.
In the painting we appreciate the meticulous detail of the lace of the sleeves and fabrics on the neckline, the rich drapery of the dress, the contrast of colors between the golden threads of the embroidery and the iridescent red of the fabric that envelops the figure and that emerges from the the dark background. Finally, the pleasant conduction which characterizes the refined line is appreciated in the capacity to make the light glide on the clothes and the complexion of the woman.

Questa affascinante scena popolare con un brulicante mercato nella main piazza è un opera di un artist fiammingo attivo intorno al 1700: si tratta di un interesting spaccato di vita dailyiana di un piccolo villaggio dell’Olanda del Secolo d´Oro.
Nella piazza brulicante di gente con sullo sfondo delle tipiche case ed una grande fontana zampillante, possiamo assistere al trambusto che ruota attorno al giorno di mercato, con figure di ogni estrazione sociale indaffarate nelle proprie attività.
Anche is difficult to ricondurre la tela alla mano di un autore in particolare, data la predilezione di molti autori a questo genere di ricche composizioni, possiamo però avvicinarne l'esecuzione alla cerchia del pittore di Anversa Pieter van Bredael (Anversa 1629–1719).
Van Bredael, che faceva parte di una grande famiglia di pittori, è registrato come allievo nella bottega di David Ryckaert III nel 1640. Dopo viaggi di studio nei Paesi Bassi e in Spagna divenne maestro della Gilda di San Luca ad Anversa nel 1651. Lavorò anche in Italia, soprattutto in Roma, dove venne strongly influenzato dallo stile compositivo del gruppo dei Bamboccianti.
Era ben noto per le sue scene di mercato altamente fantasiose che illustravano lo spettro diversificato della vita dailyiana della città. I suoi dipinti di paesaggi sono caratterizzati da accenti di colori vivaci, spesso popolati da molte figure che non possono che evocare lo stile di Jan Brueghel il Vecchio.
