This Victorian-era (circa 1880-1890s) Scottish brooch or kilt pin is a classic treasure from my homeland. Shaped like a scepter, this magnificent little pin (it measures 45.94mm or 1.8 inches in length) was entirely hand-crafted, from the intricate etching and piercing of the 15K gold. The head of the pin is set with a faceted and natural Cairngorm citrine. This is a rich, warm yellowish-orange variety of citrine found in the Cairngorm mountains which are located in the eastern Highlands of Scotland. Many kilt pins and brooches are actually set with glass faceted to look like a Cairngorm citrine, but this is the true gemstone. It s set within a miniature crown of gold. Toward the center of the pin there is a half-moon earthy red agate and below this a dagger-shaped cabochon of moss agate. All of the gems are from Scotland. And although there is no way to know this for sure, I bet the gold is also from Scotland. An elegant, sturdy and perfectly functioning closure occupies the back of the pin. Like the rest of the pin itself, this closure is not a stock piece that was added to a handmade pin: it was made by the same goldsmith who made the entire brooch. Tremendous care, skill and craftsmanship went into the creation of this antique Scottish jewel and its pristine condition is all the testimony we need to know this piece of jewelry has been well-loved and well-cared for over its long life.
