This original, striking hand signed mixed media and color ink drawing by Larry Zox, done in the mid 1960s is a study for his "Scissor Jack Series". Zox's work has been shown in institutions around the world, including a 1973 retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Zox's hard-edge geometric creations from the late 1960's and early 1970's are considered the most important from his oeuvre. Museums including the Whitney, the MoMA, the Tate and the Metropolitan all have examples of his work from this era.
Larry Zox was a central figure in both the 1960s American Lyrical Abstraction movement and followed by hard-edged abstraction. Zoe's work was inspired by leading color field painters such Kenneth Noland and Morris Louis.
Raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Zox studied at the University of Oklahoma and went on to work under the tutelage of modernist Georg Grosz at the Des Moines Art Centre.
Zox’s practice flourished in the 60s and 70s, working in New York. At his 20th St. studio, the artist was surrounded and inspired by a melting pot of jazz artists, bikers, and boxers.
By 1967, Zox arrived at his characteristic style, utilizing hard-edge shapes in bold colors to create geometric patterns. Creating harmony in his compositions, Zox would often leave parts of the canvas raw.
“Scissor Jack Series” is a quintessential example of such use of geometry and color. In this exemplary work on paper, Zox’s drafting process is left un-erased, containing the boldly-colored geometrics.

Larry Zox
Larry Zox was one of the principal representatives of the generation of young painters following the era of the Abstract Expressionists. He is best known for his exuberant geometric abstractions. Many classified him as an Abstract artist, but he considered himself to be a Colorist, which made a strong contribution to the Color Field movement of the 1960s. Zox utilized geometric forms in a mechanistic format and fewer contrasting colors in a design that is based upon improvisation. His works conform to the modern idea that art must be done with fluidity, acceleration and rapidity of execution.
