Robert Indiana
Wall to Wall Signed twice with inscription & drawing 1 of 2 Trial Proofs, Framed

1990

About the Item

Signed, Dated, Numbered, Titled and Uniquely Inscribed front and back in pencil, with two original artist's drawings "WALL TO WALL" FROM WALL: TWO STONE SUITE IV, WITH TWO ORIGINAL INK DRAWINGS VERSO, 1990 Lithograph on BFK Rives, with Ink Drawings (Signed, Inscribed, Dated with drawing verso) Inscribed in pencil "T/P 1 of 2" IV - one of only two Trial Proofs - very rare! Measurements: Artwork: 40 inches (vertical) x 28 inches (horizontal) Framed: 44 inches (vertical) x 31.5 inches (Horizontal) x 1 inch For true fans and collectors of Robert Indiana, this is a special print - one of only two that is also inscribed and accompanied by two original drawings. You could probably find this print alone at a lesser price elsewhere - but NOT with two original drawings. First, the print itself is fully documented in the catalogue raisonne of Robert Indiana's printed works by Susan Sheehan as one of only two Trial Proofs ever created for the "Wall, Two Stone" series of prints. This is Trial Proof number one of two. But the entire edition of this work, numbered IV, is only 10 -- according to the catalogue raisonne. An extremely small regular edition, particularly for Indiana. However, in addition, this work bears a special hand dedication and inscription - with two original, unique drawings. Robert Indiana cleverly plays on words here, as the work is titled "Wall: Two Stone" -- and he personally dedicates it to his friend a woman who happens to be named Terry Wall (Capizzano), in pencil on the print itself (lower front margin). In addition, on the back of the frame, is the unique inscription in the artist's distinctive and inimitable hand, "For another Wall", signed Robert Indiana - again, so the work is boldly signed twice by the artist - once on the front, and once on the back. But there's more. In addition to the inscription on the back, Robert Indiana adds two unique drawings -- one of a star, (Star of Hope) and the other LOVE -- his famous theme. This work was a personal gift to a longtime local neighbor Maine, and personal friend of Robert Indiana from his remote residence in Maine - Terry Wall Capizzano. Printer: John C. Erickson and Herbert C. Fox, Vinalhaven Press, Vinhalhaven Maine Publisher: Vinalhaven Press, Vinalhaven Maine with the blindstamp lower right. Catalogue Raisonne (for the print): Sheehan, 141 The work is in a vintage wooden frame, covered with plexiglass; there is buckling/creasing to the lower right corner of the sheet; otherwise very good OS: 44" x 31 1/2". SS: 41 1/2" x 29 1/2" Signed, Dated, Numbered, Titled and Uniquely Inscribed recto and verso in pencil, with two original artist's drawings: one of a star, and one depicting the artist's famous LOVE work; Signed "R Indiana" and dated 1990 in pencil lower right; Titled "Wall" lower left; Numbered T/P 1 of 2, IV in pencil lower left and center; Dedicated "For Terry Wall Capizzano" in pencil for Terry Wall Capizzano"; Inscribed verso "Star of Hope, Vinalhaven, 25 XII 90, for another Wall, R. Indiana". Bears publisher's blind stamp lower right recto: Printer: John C. Erickson and Herbert C. Fox, Vinalhaven Press, Vinhalhaven Maine; Publisher: Vinalhaven Press, Vinalhaven Maine with the blindstamp lower right.

Postcard signed, inscribed by Robert Indiana about his portrait at Coenties Slip
By Robert Indiana
Located in New York, NY
Robert Indiana "My portrait was taken on Coenties Slip"...., 1993 Handwritten letter on an offset lithograph postcard Boldly signed in black marker under the letter 4 2/5 × 7 3/5 inches Unframed Unique one-of-a-kind hand written, hand signed note from Robert Indiana, dated 23 VII '93, written on the postcard depicting Robert Indiana's work "Mother and Father", published by the Farnsworth Museum in Maine. The note, done in black marker, is addressed to Don Allan II of Barrington, N.H. and reads" "DON - MY PORTRAIT IF YOU DO NOT KNOW, WAS TAKEN ON COENTIES SLIP IN NYC". Robert Indiana then signs the note.. (Presumably, the reply is in response to a letter or question this fan sent to the artist asking where Indiana's portrait was taken). Makes a great gift for Robert Indiana fans! Coenties Slip is a historic artist's address in the New York art scene - there was even a book written about it! Coenties Slip is a street in the Financial District of Manhattan in New York City. It runs southeast for two blocks in Lower Manhattan from Pearl Street to South Street. A walkway runs an additional block north from Pearl Street to Stone Street Here's an excerpt from Art in America reviewing the book: "How does specificity of place play a role in art, enough to become more figure than ground, less a context than a character? This is one of the larger questions framing art historian Prudence Peiffer’s momentous new survey The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever. The book vividly documents a moment in the 1950s and ’60s when a cast of artists settled, at staggered intervals, in a three-block area around Coenties Slip, a street on Manhattan’s lower tip. Coenties Slip borrowed its name from one of the “slips”—inlets for the docking and repairing of boats—that once cut sharply into New York’s downtown waterfront, facilitating the busy circulation of fish, freight, and sailors between land and sea. While New York’s status as a maritime trading hub lured fleets of boats, it was the skeletal remains of that activity, by then sharply diminished, that drew artists to Coenties Slip. In place of industry, they found vast and vacant loft spaces, cheap to rent, in which they could both work and live (illegally, owing to zoning laws)....Peiffer’s book arrives nearly 50 years after the earliest attempt to honor the Slip: the 1974 exhibition “Nine Artists/Coenties Slip,” organized for an old downtown branch of the Whitney Museum on Water Street nearby. The exhibition showcased lesser-known inhabitants of the Slip, including Fred Mitchell (the first to settle there), Ann Wilson...
