Gathering Vraic on a Jersey Shore. c. 1937. Ink and watercolor on 'Castle Linen Tolli & Harvey LD London' countermarked paper. 7 1/8 x 13 1/2 (sheet 12 1/2 x 16 1/4). Good condition, apart from small professionally repaired paper losses at the corners, from previous hinges. Dedicated 'To my friend Harold James Bailey E.B.' and annotated 'To wish you a glad glow of happiness for Christmas and the New Year'. From the collection of the famous Blampied scholar and collector, Harold J. Bailey, who wrote an article, 'Edmund Blampied: Artist and Philosopher' in the Print Collector's Quarterly 24 (1937). Housed in a 15 1/2 x 21 1/2-inch Whistler style gold wood frame.
In the left rear section is a Martello or Conway tower, built as a fortiffiction. A Jersey Round Tower Coastal towers stand all along the coast of the island. The British built 22 round towers, one similar square tower, and eight Martello towers towards the end of the 18th Century and in the early to mid-19th Century, but now only 24 remain, including seven of the Martellos.
Vraic is a seaweed found in the Channel Islands. The main use of vraic is for spreading over potato fields during the winter. It is then ploughed into the soil before the potatoes are planted in late winter and spring. Vraic was traditionally gathered by horse and cart in Grouville Bay and St Ouen's Bay, and in smaller quantities at Le Hocq and Havre des Pas. The practice continues using...

Ross Bleckner grew up in Hewlett, Long Island, New York; drawing all the time without being aware that other artists existed. He was the middle child between two sisters; his father manufactures electronic parts He attended New York University where Sol Lewitt, Chuck Close and others were his teachers. He graduated in 1972, then spent a year at the California Institute of Arts. His contacts in the next few years were very fortuitous; Sol Lewitt and Chuck Close, Carl Andre, David Salle, Julian Schnabel, etc.
Bleckner is on the nervous side, beset by self-doubt, insomnia, and gloom. He is unpretentious, although he is bluntly handsome, with olive complexion, and a compact build. He is "10 percent that is superficial and 90 percent that has to do with the depths and that is threatened by living. He is a very complicated individual. He is a very, very morose, deeply feeling, hardworking artist- he takes a lot from within himself - but always, no matter how successful he is, he feels he is going to fall into those depths." 1
Bleckner first exhibited his work in New York in 1974. The following year he was given his first one-man show; he was included in the 1975 Whitney Biennial.. Since about 1985 has addressed many of his paintings to the subject of AIDS- both documenting it as a historical phenomenon and commemorating specific individuals who have died.

A substantial, early twentieth-century, figural pastel showing a young woman wearing traditional gypsy costume and playing her flute beside a deep azure lake dotted with water-lilies.
Jack Wiboltt first trained at Copenhagen's Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen before moving to New York in 1919. In 1924, he settled in California where he lived and painted in both San Francisco and Los Angeles. For 30 years, he practiced as an easel painter and was also commissioned to paint murals including for the 1939 exposition at San Francisco and for Hollywood's Fox Theater among others He exhibited widely and with success including at the Danish Royal Academy (1913), the New York World's Fair (1939), the Golden Gate International Exposition (1939) and the Pasadena Art Institute (1932) among others.

Daniel has suggested this study would have been executed when Leighton was studying in Frankfurt
Leighton was born in Scarborough to Augusta Susan and Dr. Frederic Septimus Leighton. He received his artistic training on the European continent, first from Eduard von Steinle and then from Giovanni Costa. According to Daniel Robbins, the curator at Leighton House, This drawing comes from the time Leighton studied under Eduard von Steinle. He then studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. From 1855 to 1859 he lived in Paris, where he met Ingres, Delacroix, Corot and Millet. In 1860, he moved to London, where he associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. In 1864 he became an associate of the Royal Academy and in 1878 he became its President (1878–96). American art critic Earl Shinn claimed at the time that "Except Leighton, there is scarce any one capable of putting up a correct frescoed figure in the archway of the Kensington Museum." His paintings represented Britain at the great 1900 Paris Exhibition. Leighton was knighted at Windsor in 1878 and was created a baronet, of Holland Park Road eight years later. He was the first painter to be given a peerage. Leighton remained a bachelor and rumours of him having an illegitimate child with one of his models, in addition to the supposition that Leighton may have been a homosexual, continue to be debated. On his death his barony was extinguished after existing for only a day; this is a record in the Peerage. His house in Holland Park, London has been turned into a museum. It contains many of his drawings and paintings, as well as some of his former art collection including a painting dedicated to Leighton by Sir John Everett Millais. The house also features many of Leighton's inspirations, including his collection of Iznik tiles. Its centrepiece is the magnificent Arab Hall. Studî della piccola Simonella (Sketches of little Simonella). August 28, 1942. Pencil drawing. 5 1/8 x 7 13/16. Rubbing to the corners, irregular sheet edges, otherwise good condition. Signed, dated and titled in pencil. Housed in an archival French mat and a 14 1/4 x 16 1/4-inch black and gold leaf frame. A charming set of studies of a sleeping child, probably the artist's daughter.
Calogero was born August 20, 1922 in Catania, Sicily. His first exhibitions in 1945 in Sicily and Rome were very successful. He arrived in Paris in 1947 and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. He is best known for his dreamlike Surrealist and genre works.
He exhibited at the Gallery Hervé in 1951 and the following year he went to New York to present his show. In 1953 he was invited to Los Angeles, where he returned two years later, and from where he regularly exhibited his works, and San Francisco.
In 1954, Maximilien Gauthier devoted a book to him published by "The Gemini." The first exhibition in Japan was in 1965. He was awarded the Grand Silver Medal by the City of Paris in 1957. Calogero had numerous exhibitions in Paris, in the fifties, plus the American exhibitions in New York (Associated American Artists, 1952), Los Angeles (James Vigevano Galleries, 1953), and then later in Japan and in major galleries in Italy. He lived and worked for many years in Paris and Italy. He died in 2001.
