Provenance Arij Gasiunasen Fine Art, Toronto Private Collection, Ontario, Canada Publications "Walasse Ting: Ricer Paper Painting/Peinture sur papier de riz," Yves Rivière, 1984. Born Ding Xiongquan in Wuxi, China in 1928, Walasse Ting was a visual artist and poet known for his colorful paintings that often depicted the sensuality of women, juxtaposed with animal companions such as cats, birds, and insects. After growing up in Shanghai and Hong Kong, Ting left for Paris in 1952 and never looked back. There, he associated with artists such as Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, and Pierre Alechinsky, all of whom were members of the avant-garde group CoBrA. A hallmark of the CoBrA artists was the colorful and expressive imagery, which Ting deftly blended with elements of his native Chinese culture. In 1959, he moved to New York, which would serve as Ting's primary home for the rest of his life. In the 1960s, he met and married his wife Nathalie, and the couple eventually welcomed a daughter and a son, Mia and Jesse. For the next three decades, Ting would paint, exhibit, and travel extensively. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for drawing in 1970. In addition to his art practice, he continued to write and practice poetry. He is the author of 13 books, including All in my Head and One Cent Life - a portfolio of 62 original lithographs by 28 artists, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Kiki Kogelnik, Tom Wesselmann, James Rosenquist, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel, Claes Oldenburg, Joan Mitchell, Robert Rauschenberg, and Sam Francis. After the death of his wife in 1986, he took his children and spent several months living and working in Amsterdam. Ting and his children were so taken with life in the Netherlands, that he would split time between Amsterdam and New York for the rest of his life. While in the Netherlands in 2002, Ting suffered a massive brain hemorrhage, which effectively ended his painting career. He would eventually recover and move back to New York permanently, where he lived until his death on May 17, 2010. A true "citizen of the world," Ting's work incorporated elements of many major artistic movements of the 20th century, from Matisse's brand of modernism, to Abstract Expressionism, Color Field, and even Pop Art. Accordingly, his legacy holds significance in American, European, and Asian post-war art history. Ting's works are found in the permanent collections of many museums worldwide, including the Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. Waterline Fine Art, Austin, TX is pleased to present the following work: Acrylic and mixed media on canvas. Signed, titled, and dated verso. 40 x 76.5 in. 41.75 x 78.25 in. (framed) Custom framed in a solid, unfinished maple floater. Provenance Watson/de Nagy & Company, Houston Private Collection, New York Sherron Francis was born in 1940, in Downers Grove, IL outside of Chicago. She originally enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, but later transferred to the Kansas City Art Institute to focus more on art. Initially, Francis' practice was focused on figurative art, with visiting professor and renowned modern realist Philip Pearlstein remarking on Francis’ draftsman acumen. In the early 1960s, art dealers and gallerists from New York would visit the Institute to entice promising artists by offering scholarships and financial aid. Because such financial arrangements were only made for men, Francis had to persuade the school's leadership to allow for women to also be eligible for merit-based aid. Her advocacy was successful, and she ultimately graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1963. She would then proceed to obtain her MFA from the University of Indiana, before assuming a teaching position at Eastern Michigan University. In 1968, with only $300 on hand, Francis moved to 16 Waverly Place in SoHo, New York. The neighborhood was a hotbed for young AbEx artists of the day, and she quickly befriended the likes of Peter Reginato, Walter Darby Bannard, Michael Steiner, Peter Young, Peter Bradley...

Fenzoni, Painting AND preparatorial Drawing, John the Baptist, Italy Renaissance
By Ferrau Fenzoni
Located in Greven, DE
The painting and the preparatory drawing are offered together. Provenance Private collection, Germany, Trier, c. 1980- 2013 Saint John the Baptist Brown ink and wash over red chalk on oatmeal paper 31 x 20.5 cm Inscribed: „Ferrau Fenzonio da Faenza invt. esque … imp. da Fran. Villamena …“. bears the collector's mark of Henry Scipio Reitlinger (1882-1950; Lugt 2274a) on a tiny label glued to the verso On the reverse is a partial drawing of a Pieta, pricked for transfer. Provenance New York, Doyle, 14. October 2015, No. 6 The painting and the preparatory drawing resemble the composition of an engraving after Ferraù Fenzoni by Francesco Villamena. Drawing, engraving and painting are almost identical, except for minor differences. Even the measurements nearly correspond: painting (32 x 25,5 cm), drawing (30 x 20,5 cm), engraving (31,1 x 23,5 cm). Dr. Guiseppe Scavizzi confirmed the attribution of the present panting to Fenzoni and he dates it to c. 1590. The inscription on the drawing reads “Ferrau Fenzonio da Faenza invt. esque. . . imp. da Fran: Villamena . . .”. The engraving’s inscription also lists place and date “Ferra Fensionius inventor/F. Villamoena sculpsit Rome/Aspectu fruitur… antra puer/cum Privilegio… 1613”. Interestingly, the engraving is not mirrored as it is in most printing processes. Painting, drawing and engraving are not reversed but the same. It is remarkable to note that there are further paintings by Fenzoni which were engraved in the same order and not reverted. They also show strong parallels regarding the compositions and the measurements (see for example “Deposition of Christ” ). Ferraù Fenzoni was an Italian painter mainly active in Todi. He is also called Il Faenzone after his birthplace (Faenza). He apprenticed in Rome during the papacy of Gregory XIII and contributed to numerous fresco cycles under pope Sixtus V, such as the Loggia della Benedizioni in the Lateran Palace, the frescoes on the walls and vaults of the Scala Santa of the adjacent Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, and the decoration in the Sistine library. His expressive canvases straddle the styles of Mannerism and Baroque. In 1594, he moved to Todi. A “Last Judgement” by him is housed in the cathedral of Todi. He returned to Faenza in 1599, where he decorated chapels in the cathedral from 1612 to 1616. In 1622, he completed a “Deposition”, now in the local Pinacoteca. In 1640, Fenzoni was named “cavaliere dello speron d’oro” by Cardinal Colonna and, on 25th April 1634, he was nominated vicar and “castellano of Granarolo”. Fenzoni‘s style is characterized by a mixture of the Mannerism of the Northern Netherlands and the Italian Baroque.
