About the Item

Latvia-born William Sanderson became a contributor to the New Yorker and New Masses magazines during the 1930s. He was drafted into the Army during World War II and was stationed in Colorado. After the war he stayed there and became known at a prominent painter of the Colorado landscape. This india-ink drawing, titled 'Fascists' on the reverse, is particularly interesting knowing Sanderson's background. The hammer and sickle have a prominent spot on the background buildings. Interesting that he cam make the figures so obnoxious with just a few lines and high riding boots. It is initialed in ink at the lower left of the drawing. It is titled in pencil on the reverse and the artist's stamp is on both the front and the back.
