Hash marks come together in this colored pen study of a flayed figure. The quick and loose style evoke studies done in preparation for a larger piece. They often appear unfinished yet in reality, the artist reached a point with the study has served its purpose and he can then move on to producing the main work. Christopher Ganz Flayed Wax-Cast Figure colored pens 10h x 13.50w in 25.40h x 34.29w cm CG0020 -ARTIST STATEMENT- I depict my person in multiplicity with different selves representing dramatis personae. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an Everyman who is at odds with society and his self. Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid. This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light. -BIO- Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey, and Michael Mazur. Christopher is now an associate professor of printmaking and drawing at Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne. His family lived in there until 1920 when the family moved to France to stay. Volti studied at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Nice from 1928 to 1920. By 1932 the young artist had won a gold medal for two polychrome bas-reliefs before going to Paris, where he entered the studio of Jean Boucher at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris at the age of only fifteen. After serving in the Second World War, when he was interned as a prisoner of war in Bavaria, he returned in poor health to Paris, only to find his studio destroyed. From 1947 he showed work at various Paris Salons and, in 1954 and 1955 at the Brussels and Antwerp Biennales. In 1957 a retrospective of his work was organized at the Museum Rodin in Paris. This spectacular red chalk drawing depicts an elderly woman, her eyes bulging, her hand stretched out towards the sky. This disturbing character, who seems close to dementia, and the elongation of her arm with its Mannerist overtones, plunge us into the Florentine artistic milieu of the first half of the 17th century. The proximity of this drawing to some characters in the fresco in the Pitti Palace representing The Muses, Poets and Philosophers chased from Parnassus, the last masterpiece of Giovanni da San Giovanni, leads us to propose an attribution to this artist and a dating of around 1635-1636. 1. Giovanni da San Giovanni, the painter of contradiction We take here the title of the monography dedicated to the artist by Anna Banti in 1977, which remains the reference book for this artist. The son of a notary, Giovanni Mannozzi, known as Giovanni da San Giovanni, abandoned his studies to go to Florence at the age of sixteen, where he entered the studio of Matteo Rosselli (1578 - 1650) around 1609 and enrolled in the Academy of Drawing Arts in 1612. Around 1615 he produced his first known works, mainly frescoes for the city's tabernacles. He became famous in Florence for his originality, combining an obsessive application to the study of drawing and the reading of poetry and history with a disheveled appearance. Between 1619 and 1620 he decorated the facade of the Antella Palace in Piazza Santa Croce, a decoration that still partly survives today. The death of Cosimo II in 1621 put an end to the Florentine building activity and Giovanni da San Giovanni left for Rome to find other sponsors with the painter Francesco Furini...

Ross Bleckner grew up in Hewlett, Long Island, New York; drawing all the time without being aware that other artists existed. He was the middle child between two sisters; his father manufactures electronic parts He attended New York University where Sol Lewitt, Chuck Close and others were his teachers. He graduated in 1972, then spent a year at the California Institute of Arts. His contacts in the next few years were very fortuitous; Sol Lewitt and Chuck Close, Carl Andre, David Salle, Julian Schnabel, etc. Bleckner is on the nervous side, beset by self-doubt, insomnia, and gloom. He is unpretentious, although he is bluntly handsome, with olive complexion, and a compact build. He is "10 percent that is superficial and 90 percent that has to do with the depths and that is threatened by living. He is a very complicated individual. He is a very, very morose, deeply feeling, hardworking artist- he takes a lot from within himself - but always, no matter how successful he is, he feels he is going to fall into those depths." 1 Bleckner first exhibited his work in New York in 1974. Artist biography: Ludovic-Rodolphe Pissarro, born in Paris in 1878, was Camille Pissarro’s fourth son. Encouraged by his father, he began drawing from nature at an early age. He was familiarly known as “Rodo” and generally signed his works "Ludovic-Rodo", or early on in his career simply "Rodo". The impact of Camille’s art and teaching on Rodo was considerable. His artistic production encompassed a wide range of media, including oil painting, tempera, watercolour, gouache, wood engraving, drawing and lithography. Rodo exhibited regularly at the Salon des Indépendants over a forty-year period. In 1894, at the age of sixteen, Rodo published his first wood engravings in the anarchist journal, Le Père Peinard. When Camille left France for the safety of Belgium during the anarchist upheavals of the same year, Rodo joined him there. Rodo moved into his first studio in Montmartre with his brother Georges in 1898. Works of this early important period until just after the death of his father in 1903 were post-impressionist and clearly painted under the influence of his father. By 1904 living in Paris, he found the nightlife and the habitués of the cafes, theatres, circuses and cabarets compelling subjects for his work and changed dramatically the style of his painting, affiliating himself to the Fauve artists. Rodo became close to artists such as Kees Van Dongen, Maurice de Vlaminck and Raoul Dufy. In 1905 he participated in the first Fauve exhibition at the Salon des Indépendants. In 1907 he visited Van Dongen in Rotterdam and the two artists continued to paint together, something they often did in Paris. In 1914 he married, though he never had children. Later that year at the outbreak of the War Rodo moved to England. Over the next seven years he lived mainly in and around West London. He worked closely with his brother Lucien to establish in 1915 the Monarro Group, formed with the aim of exhibiting work by contemporary artists inspired by Impressionism. Many of the works produced by Rodo while he was in England were of London landmarks but, he was also interested in the urbanisation of West London. After 1921, when Rodo had already returned to France, he divided his time between Paris and Les Andelys in Normandy, living and working closely with his elder brother Georges Manzana. Despite his rich artistic heritage and his achievements as an artist, Rodo is perhaps best remembered for his contribution to art history. Elegant pastel painting on paper by John Alfred Begg (1903 - 1974). This piece features a striking cubist nude study in blue-gray color with contrasting black lines. There is no visible signature. Provenance: From the estate of the artist. Newly reframed in an elegant blue-silver textured wood frame with black matte and acrylic glass protection. Biography: John Alfred Begg was born in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, on June 23, 1903. He studied art at Columbia University (BS), with Arthur Wesley Dow, with Charles Martin, and studied sculpture with Jose De Creeft and Ossip Zadkine. He was a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Typophiles, and the Yonkers Art Association (chairman from 1972-1973). He worked as an art editor and book designer at the American Book Company, New York, 1932-1937, as Art Director at Oxford University Press, New York, 1939-1968, and as vice-president from 1960-1968, as an art director at Art In America 1957-1959 where he won the Readerscope Award in 1945 for a bronze work. He also taught art and lectured on basic design at New York University from 1950 to 1958.
