Simka Simkhovitch
Sonya in Blue, sketch in color

Circa 1936

About the Item

Simkhovitch was one of America's great success stories at the time of World War II as Life Magazine did a big story on this artist. This marvelous sketch is an example of the joy of hanging works that artist's did that are partially finished and exude spontaneity and a marvelous glimpse into capturing the essence of character and composition. Sonya was the artists daughter but he used family members not to do portraits but as representatives of what he was trying to capture. He was renowned for doing depictions of American children of many different ethnic background as Simkhovitch, himself an immigrant to American; loved this element of American life. There was an exhibition of these works well documented. In this sketch, its really a lovely achievement of relating the innocence of the sitter along with the brown curls, the delicate collar and all the elements that make an adult charmed by a youngster. Simkhovitch gained much press and praise in the art world of New York at this time. He was an active participant in the WPA and did many commissions for it. He also is prominently featured in the "Regionalist" movement for his depictions of New Yorkers, part of Connecticut and then the deep South such as Mississippi. This is framed in a high quality hand carved frame. Inside the frame the artwork is 17 x 14.25

Woman, Yellow Shawl and Fan
Located in Greenwich, CT
An impressive and masterful depiction of a young woman with a fan. An American artist who studied and traveled in Europe and painted this painting before his return. It has its original frame which is magnificent. The frame has been regilded in th past 10 years. Vinton was abroad in the 1880s. The sitter gazes coyly over her fan in a gesture that ladies and gentleman of fin-de-siècle Europe would have understood to mean “wait for me,” and perhaps indicating her interest in a potential suitor. Vinton embarked on several trips to Europe—to Spain in 1882 with William Merritt Chase and Robert Blum, and to several different countries in 1888 following his marriage—which provided inspiration for a renewed style and subject matter. While in Spain with Chase and Blum, the three artists visited Madrid and Toledo; there, Vinton studied the masterfully tenebrous portraits of Velázquez, an influence that can be seen in Portrait with Yellow Shawl...
